Salvatore Strazza Obituary

SALVATORE STRAZZA, SR., age 60, passed away peacefully at his home in Holly Springs, NC on April 1, 2011. He was a devoted husband to his wife Robin (Docimo) Strazza for 41 years. He was born on April 3, 1950 to the late Rocco and Lillian (Bianco) Strazza. He worked for the Town of Greenwich for 13 years. Sal was a great friend to some, a father to two, a husband, a grandfather to one, a brother to four and one loved by many. He was an avid golfer and sports fan and lifelong fan of the NY Yankees and Giants. He was a man who devoted himself to coaching baseball in the Greenwich Junior Babe Ruth League for over 30 years. In doing so, he has touched the hearts of many young players, parents, coaches, and people in general. He was a man with a heart that had no boundaries and a love for his family and friends just as great. He will be missed by many and will forever live in the hearts of those who were blessed enough to know him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Salvatore Strazza, Jr. and his fiancée Stephanie Hoanzl, his daughter Stephanie Strazza and the light of his life, his granddaughter Kassidy Ann (Kaysadeech) Strazza, his sisters Josephine (Carl) Matulis, Nancy (David) Van Gorp, his brothers Rocco Strazza and Joseph (Cheryl) Strazza and one uncle, several aunts, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday April 16th at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 95 Henry St. in Byram. At the request of the family, memorial donations can be made to the Amreican Cancer Society (www.cancer.org/donate <http://www.cancer.org/donate> ) or to the Greenwich Jr. Babe Ruth League (P.O. Box 5233, Greenwich, CT 06830).

As the years pass, I miss Sal even more. He had an infectious smile, he cared about others and he never had a loss for words. Although he was 4 years older than me, we grew up together and shared similar backgrounds. We were both Italian, loved sports, cared about our small community and were brought up with the same family values. Sal Strazza was just about as unique as a person could be and I guess that's what made him so special. You are missed, but never forgotten.....I'll see you some day when we will be reunited. God Bless!

My sincerest condolences to the entire Strazza Family.
Sal would bellow "hey Dorothy" in that unmistakable voice of his. It did not matter if it was at the; skating rink, ball field, golf course, anywhere, “hey Dorothy!” It did not matter to Sal. He made sure that I knew he was there. If I were on the 9th hole at Bruce and he was on the 1st tee” Hey Dorothy!” Everyone would know when Sal was in the area. As one of my coaches. a mentor and a friend, he will be missed.
I think re-naming the Byram School baseball field after Sal would be a great tribute to him, if Sals’ family is not adverse to the idea. Goto Byram Neighborhood Associations’ web-site http://www.byramct.org/petition.asp to sign the petition.

My condolences to the Strazza family. I remember Sal from the pick-up games we used to play in Chickahominy and Byram. He was an entertainer as much as he was a good ballplayer. And always there to help someone out. He will be missed.

Robin & Family,
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Sal's death. Bob remembers him as a boy at the Canteen--keeping him out of harms way, then as a good friend playing golf and the best mechanic we ever had! He would do anything for you, had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed. We will be in Virginia and can't make the funeral but you will remain in our prayers.

Dear Robin:
Jessica, Lucy, Macauley, Caitlin and I send you, little Sal and Stephanie our condolences on the loss of wonderful Sal. How sad for you. One comfort, I guess, is that he's "up there" with Tod -- ad they're probably getting in some kind of trouble. Take care.

Coach,
Thanks for all the lessons about baseball and more importantly life. I will always remember the look on your face after we won the championship with Griff Harris. Every time I face a tough lefty I can hear your voice telling me to "crowd the plate". Every fly ball I catch I think of you laughing and saying "Ha ha you see what happens when you catch the ball with two hands". I will always remember you, and will take the lessons you taught me every where I go in life. I know your up there still coaching and still yelling at umpires about bad calls.
Rest in Peace Coach

He was truly a guy I trusted and looked up to. He was a really great brother in law that if he could would move mountains for family and friends. I was lucky enough to know him. But what saddens me most his granddaughter will not remember her wonderful grandfather. She will hear the wonderful stories about him and the pictures, but won't hear his voice or his laughter. Sal and Steph I am so sorry and Robin thank you for taking such good care of him. He loved you ALL very much.

April 8, 2011

Sal was one of the most lovable people I have ever known, even when he was yelling about a blown call I made on the field. I will always treasure our friendship, that booming voice, and that smile that brought out the same in all who met him. I look forward to seeing him again one day when we can root for Heaven's Yankees. Thoughts and prayers to Robin and the Strazza family....may the many memories guide you through these difficult days.

I am saddened to hear of Sal's passing. He was a dear friend and a great guy. Growing up together in our Byram Terrace - Reynolds Place neighborhood, we were teammates in baseball and football. We also had many good times playing softball for the Newport Inn. Sal will be missed by all who were blessed by knowing him and whose lives were touched by him. May he rest in peace and may God bless the entire Strazza family. You now have a very special angel.
