Gwendolyn D. Kromis, 92, went home to walk with her Lord and Savior Thursday.
Born in Pond Creek on Dec. 1, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Esther and Edmund Williams. She later moved to Upper Lehigh and Freeland where she resided for more than 80 years before moving to Drums for the remainder of her life.
She began working at Grant's department store, Freeland, before moving on to Tung-Sol/Wagner Electric. She also spent many years volunteering at the Freeland Food Pantry.
Gwenie was a lifetime and loving member of Bethel Baptist Church, Freeland. That "little church on the hill" is where she devoted much of her time, helping it to grow. She was a Sunday school teacher since the age of 13. She helped organize and lead youth groups and Bible schools, and she was a member of the church choir, Mystery Sisters and Ladies Class. She was also a board member and moderator. She was loved by her church family and will surely be missed.
She is survived by a daughter, Sara Jane Wenner, Sara's husband, Tom, the son she never had, and granddaughter, love of her life, Morgan, all of Drums. In addition, she is survived by sisters, Ester Wray, Arlington, Va.; Elinor Reese, Walnutport; as well as many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great nieces and great-great-nephews who she adored and loved.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Donald J. Kromis; along with many of her sisters and brothers, whom she dearly loved and missed, Lewis and David Williams; Mary Jane Heckler; Llewellyn Williams; Phyllis Kauffman; Blodwyn Smith; Beatrice Taylor; Ruth Effrig; Edmund "Buddy" Williams; Rebecca Russell; and William "Billy" Williams.
Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church, 727 Ridge St., Freeland. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East), 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums, and also from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in Freeland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Bethel Baptist Church for the Youth Group and for the restoration of the Esther Davis Williams Memorial Chapel. Contributions can be sent or given to Sara Jane.
