John "Jack" Henry Gould, M.D., 86, of Shiloh, N.J., passed away peacefully at The Country House in Wilmington, Del., the morning of March 4.
Dr. Gould was a long-time resident of Shiloh, N.J., with his wife, Carol, who predeceased him in January 2020.
He practiced family medicine in Shiloh, N.J., for 50 years. Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late John B. Gould and the late Ruth Henry Gould.
A graduate of West Hazleton High School, he matriculated at Dickinson College, Carlisle, where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Jack then went on to receive his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. Following an internship at Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center, Camden, N.J., he and Carol moved to Shiloh, N.J., where he briefly joined and then took over the medical practice of his father-in-law, Carl N. Ware, M.D.
In 1968, he was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He served two years and was stationed in Seoul, South Korea, where he worked at the base hospital before serving a year in the U.S. Army Reserves. He received the National Defense Service Medal and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his service and was honorably discharged in 1972, having reached the rank of major.
Jack was a member of the Bridgeton Hospital medical staff and numerous medical societies and associations. In 1987, he was appointed medical director of South Jersey Hospital and served in that capacity for several years before returning to private practice in the Shiloh Medical Group, where he remained until his retirement in 2012.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Bridgeton, N.J., serving as a trustee for several years.
Jack enjoyed sports of all kinds, but was probably best known and remembered for his love of bicycling. He completed many long-distance rides in the United States and abroad, including a coast-to-coast ride across the United States in the summer of 1993. He and his late wife, Carol, were avid travelers, spending time exploring the United States and countless countries around the globe during the 60-plus years they spent together. Closer to home, he and Carol enjoyed the annual beach vacations in Ocean City, N.J., with their constantly growing family and spending time with their closely-knit group of friends referred to as "The Crocks," a name for which Jack is rumored to be responsible.
He is survived by four children, his daughter, Sharon Johnston, her husband, Brian and their children, Kate and Nick; his son, John Gould Jr., his wife Sharon and their children, Tim and his wife Katrina, Ellie, Anna and Mary; his daughter, Barb VanderPloeg, her husband, Dave and their children, Luke, Ben, Meg and her husband, Chad, Case and Lake and Barb and Dave's grandchild, Shiloh; and his daughter, Leslie Osman, her husband, Bob and their children, Rachel and Micheal. Additional survivors include his brother, Robert Gould, his wife, Jeanie and their family; and his sister, Debbie Cara, her husband, John and their family.
In addition to his wife, Carol Ware Gould, and his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandsons, Eric and Jacob Osman.
Family and friends are invited to attend Dr. Gould's memorial service at noon Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, West Commerce and Giles streets, Bridgeton, N.J., where friends will be received from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
The burial will take place privately in Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Hopewell Twp., N.J.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 119 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, NJ 08302; or to The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research, FDR Station, PO Box 220, New York, NY 10150. Please write "In Memory of John Gould" on the memo line.

I met Jack & Carol on a biking tour in Europe & followed that with many more. Such great people. I am happy for the memories we made. They were true friends even though we were separated by many miles. RIP Jack!

I had the pleasure of doing several European cycling trips with Jack and Carol. They were two of the nicest, genuine people you could ever hope to know! Jack was always ready to help anyone and kept things lively! He will truly be missed!

Heartbroken. I was his patient all of his 50 years practice, starting at his Shiloh home office th his wife. Happy for him; but was sad upon his retirement. Dr. Gould was a great, caring and wise man. He will be truly missed. My deepest sympathy to all his family.
