With deep sorrow we announce the passing of John Scalleat, beloved father, husband and visionary entrepreneur, on Friday.
John leaves behind a legacy of dedication, community involvement and entrepreneurial mastery.
John was born June 17, 1947, to Samuel and Bernadine (Sweeney) Scalleat, in Hazleton. He graduated from Hazleton High School and received his bachelor's degree from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.
John founded the Scalleat Hospitality Group, known for its exceptional dining experiences and commitment to quality. His passion for entrepreneurship and unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction were evident in every aspect of his work. Through his leadership, along with his brother, James Scalleat, for many years, the company flourished, establishing well-loved brands such as Jon's Campus Shop, Ovalon Bar & Grill, Close Quarters, Powerhouse Eatery and Connor's Grillroom.
John was more than just a successful businessman, he was a devoted family man.
He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine; children, Connor Scalleat (Natalie Lynn); Marcia Gabrielle (Joseph Gabrielle); and Michael Rosati; brother, Samuel (Janine) Scalleat; sister, Sheila Scalleat (Frank Tuchi); sister-in-law, Lori Scalleat; and granddaughters, Molly, Tilly and Lily.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jim, in 2023.
His warmth, generosity and genuine care for others touched the lives of all who knew him.
Everyone who ever worked for John always spoke of how wonderful of a boss he was. His leadership was demonstrated by the long tenure of his team members, many staying for numerous decades, showing their deep commitment and loyalty to him and the Scalleat Hospitality Group.
John and his wife, Catherine, also shared a love for nature, especially on their wonderful farm named In-between Farms, where the family still resides. The farm used to be an active horse farm, which was a passion for both John and Catherine outside of the restaurants, along with their beloved Golden Retriever, Orvis. They took great pride in always adding more flowers and trees, manicuring the farm into a place they could escape. Watching the birds and taking care of the land meant so much to both John and Catherine.
Today, the Scalleat Hospitality Group operates Powerhouse Eatery, The Canning House and Ovalon Bar & Grill, continuing John's legacy of entrepreneurial vision.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped in ways big and small to make life a little easier for John and his family. An exceptional thank you to Highland Park Senior Living, where the entire team and residents loved and took exceptional care of John and to Traditional Hospice for their dedicated and compassionate care.
In honor of John Scalleat's legacy and his passion for the culinary arts, we are proud to announce the establishment of the John Scalleat Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who demonstrates a strong interest in pursuing a degree or certificate in culinary arts. Dear Scalleat family... My wife Linda and I want to apologize for sending these thoughts very late. We frequented Connor's grillroom and enjoyed many fine meals over the years. John was usually there to greet us like we were family. We miss John and want to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family. We knew his brother Jim as well. May they rest in peace.

John, Katie and their family were all exceptional people. Getting to know John was to take care of him. During that time over the years, I´ve learned what a hard working, compassionate, man he was and was always full of life and love. His wife, never failed to show her dedication and honor to their relationship. I always admired their love and commitment. My daily job isn´t the same without seeing John, his wife and family. John has made a huge impact on our hearts and he and his family were impossible not to love. John, you are missed every single day. I´m so thankful to have gotten to know and care for you. My deepest condolences, to the loving Scalleat family.

Goodbye to my good old friend John from the neighborhood. We played touch football many times and I was always tackled by him and could never get away. He always liked my 1956 bronze colored Pontiac convertible; so I sold it to him when I moved to CT to marry Karen. My sympathy to the entire Scalleat family for their loss. I know I will never forget him. May he forever rest in peace.
My sincere condolences

Katie,
I am so sorry for you & your families loss, my heart aches for all of you. It was an honor getting to know John over the last couple of years, he gave me great financial & analytical business advice that will carry over with me the rest of my life as I slowly enter the business world as an owner/operator. I am so grateful for what little time of his life I got to spend with him & will miss seeing your smiling faces on a weekly basis at Highland.
With love,
