McDONALD, Althea Barrett
Age 97, of Owego, NY, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2008, at Elderwood at Tioga in Waverly, NY, where she had been residing. She was born in Owego, NY on September 28, 1910, to George and Irene (Barber) Barrett. Althea was predeceased by her husband of nearly 65 years, Howard S. McDonald in 2000; her brothers, Edwin, Walter and Marshall Barrett; and her sister, Maxine Sherman. She is survived by several nieces and nephews; grand and great-grand nieces and nephews; and her sisters-in-law, Julia Barrett of Owego, and Shirley Barrett of Liberty, NY. Althea lived in the same house from age 2 with her grandparents, VanNess and Chloe (Lake) Barrett, into her marriage, and until moving to Tioga Healthcare Facility five years ago. She attended Owego Free Academy and during her career was employed by several Owego businesses including The Green Lantern Restaurant, Halstead's Garage, the Owego National Bank, and Stars Jewelry. Althea was a lifelong member of the Owego United Methodist Church, where she taught a boys' Sunday school class as a teenage girl, was a member of the Dorothean class, and volunteered at Red Cross blood drives and her church bazaars for many years. A Funeral Service will be held at Richards Funeral Home, Rte. 17c West, Owego, NY, on Friday, July 25, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Kenneth Wood officiating. Interment will be in Tioga Cemetery, Owego. Family and friends are invited to visit at Richards Funeral Home on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
