Daniel McCarthy Obituary
Daniel W. A devoted community servant of Elmira's Southside passed away very unexpectedly on Saturday, November 16, 2002. Born on September 1, 1935 here in Elmira, Dan was the son of the late Owen P. and Loretta M. Bebble McCarthy. He graduated from Southside High School in 1953 and attended Eckels Mortuary School at Temple University, graduating in 1958. Mr. McCarthy was the proprietor of the McCarthy Funeral Home which he operated for many years. The McCarthy's served many families throughout the area in their time of grief. Dan also devoted much of his time to The Ancient Order of Hibernians of Chemung County where he was a Past President and Steward. Dan was a former Committee Chairman for the Democratic Party. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary's Franklin St. Church where he was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He worked Bingo and served on the Parish Council for many years. Dan also served on the Parochial School Board where he was a past President. A loving father and grandfather, Dan enjoyed time spent with his family and many friends and brothers at the Hibernians. Surviving is his loving friend and the mother of his children, Marjorie McCarthy; their children, a daughter & son-in-law, Eileen & Mark Ruppenthal of Horseheads; sons & daughters-in-law, William & Jennifer McCarthy and Kevin & Colleen McCarthy of Elmira; a granddaughter, Lindsay McCarthy; along with numerous cousins and cherished friends. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway Southport on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Morning prayers will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday (9:15AM) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Franklin St. Church (10AM). Graveside committal services will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Ancient Order of Hibernians Building Fund, 701 Kinyon St., Elmira, NY 14904 in Dan's memory. Hibernian Notice Officers and members of the Ancient order of Hibernians of Chemung County will meet at Caywood's on Tuesday evening (6:45PM) to honor our departed brother and friend, Dan McCarthy.
