Earle Catlin Obituary

CATLIN, Earle R.

Age 90 and long time resident of Horseheads passed away at home surrounded by his family on Sunday Feb. 8, 2015. Earle was born Nov. 29, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, to Ralph and Katherine (Dickerson) Catlin. Earle will be remembered by the love of his life of nearly 70 years, Evelyn (Pease) Catlin; daughter and son-in-law, Lynda (James) Ely from Warrenton, VA; son and daughter-in-law, Larry (Suzy) Catlin from Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Jason (Mary) Ely, Christopher Ely, Jennifer Ely, Kevin Catlin, Bryan Catlin; great-grandchildren, Lauren Ely, Samantha Catlin and Noah Catlin; great-granddaughter, Chloe; sisters, Audrey Catlin and Virginia "Ginny" Townsend; and brother, James Catlin all of Rochester, NY. Earle was predeceased by his brothers, Donald (Helen) Catlin, Edward "Bubs" Catlin and granddaughter, Heidi Kent Catlin; Earle was a member of the Horseheads First United Methodist Church and instrumental in the development and establishment of the foundation for their living memorial endowment fund. He was a 45 year founding member and past president of the Horseheads Kiwanis Club; member of Horseheads Old Oak Lodge #364 F & AM, Charter member of Horseheads Elks and was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Village of Horseheads, serving as Deputy Mayor for the majority of his 28 years under three different mayors. Earle was active on many boards and advisory committees including the Horseheads Library where he was recently elected as Board Member Emeritus. Earle was a WWII veteran of the US Army and survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He began his over 60 year career in the investment field at the age of 16 transcribing the tickertapes to the chalk board in the Elmira office of FI DuPont and Company. Never really retiring, Earle remained active as a Senior Vice President with Morgan Stanley. Earle always had a smile, a copy of Barron's under his arm and good joke to tell. Above all else, Earle was devoted to his family. Earle and Evelyn's philanthropic generosity and community minded focus assisted countless organizations in Chemung County and surrounding areas. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Thursday Feb. 12, 2015 from 2-4:00 pm and again from 6-8:00 pm. A celebration of his life will take place in the Horseheads First United Methodist Church 1034 W. Broad St. Horseheads on Friday Feb. 13, 2015 at 10:30 am with the Rev. Rhonda Kouterick officiating. All the plaudits posted to date are certainly true and well deserved. For one thing, he provided unbounded information and guidance for the investment committee of the Horseheads Historical Society's Zim House. This is an excellent example of the way the community benefitted from Earle Catlin.

Dear Evelyn and family;
Earle was a remarkable man in so many, many ways. He was a patriot who fought for his country, he was someone who gave tirelessly to his community, he was a self-made business success and he was devoted to the love of his life - Evelyn - and his children and grandchildren with every fiber of his being. Add to those fine attributes his wonderful sense of humor and his genuine zest for life and you got one great, feisty, funny terrific guy! It was a true privilege to call him friend and we will remember him all of our days. We are so very sorry for your loss which is too large to imagine. He was a rare gem in a world of the everyday and always so modest about his own success. With sincere sympathy - Maureen Ferrell and Scott Breese
