Ellen Christine
Born, August 29, 1917, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2007, to join her Creator, her parents, Martin E. and Agnes O'Neill Dietrick, and her beloved husband, Joseph V. Maloney. Ellen is survived by her children, with their families, Elizabeth A. Maloney of Pine City, with fiancé, John Spaziani; Martin E. Maloney of Painted Post, with daughters, Jennifer L. (Benjamin) Nugent of Portland, OR, and Rebecca M. (Jody) Payne, of Chester, England; Margaret L. Maloney of Snyder, NY, with husband, Edward Scaduto and children, Stephen J. and Kathryn Mariel Scaduto; James P. Maloney of Buffalo, NY; and Daniel J. Maloney, of Elmira, with life partner, Garnet P. Halm; great-granddaughter, Maggie Rose Nugent; former son-in-law and family friend, Gerald Daly of Elmira; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles and Sue Maloney of Waverly, Patricia DeMarinis of Old Bridge, NJ; along with many nieces and nephews. Ellen was born in Patton PA and was proud of her position as secretary to the Board of Education. Ellen had met Joe at the Sunset Ballroom near Patton, before World War II, where they danced to the Big Bands of that era. Ellen and Joe married in October of 1947 and moved to Elmira soon after. She worked at LeValley McCloud prior to starting a family at age 33. For the next 12 years Ellen raised her children, returning to work when her youngest child was 4. She worked for 30 years at the Elmira City School District as a secretary, the last 27 with the guidance office at Broadway Junior High School from where she retired at the age of 75. Ellen took great pride in her work as a professional secretary. She was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, Ladies Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, and the Widow's Club. Ellen was devoted to her family and her Catholic faith. She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of Water and Walnut Sts., on Friday, December 14, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, December 15, 2007 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Donations in Ellen's memory may be directed to either, Chemung County Nursing Facility – Activities Fund, 103 Washington Street, Elmira NY 14901, or the Samaritan Center, 480 S. Main Street, Elmira NY 14904. Ladies Division of A.O.H. will meet at McInerny Funeral Home on Friday, December 14, 2007 at 6:45 p.m. to conduct a service for Ellen.
