John Joseph Jay Assistant to the President of St. Joseph's Hospital for Physician Recruitment and Associate Administrator Age 75, of 108 Orchard Street, Horseheads, NY, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2000 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, NY. Jay was born May 16, 1925 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the son of the late John E. & Regina I. Lilly Reed. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II, while being stationed in Burma. Jay received his B.S. in Pharmacy at Duquesne University in 1950 and received his M.B.A. from Xavier University in 1975. Jay was a recipient of the St. Joseph's Hospital Oppy Award in March of 1978, member of the American College of Hospital Administrators, Emergency Medical Service Regional Council, and a member of the Board of Review for National League for Nursing and a former board member of St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation. He worked at St. Joseph's Hospital for several years and retired as the Assistant to the President for Physician Recruitment and was the Associate Administrator. He was a devoted Catholic and a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads, NY. Jay dearly loved his family and dedicated his life to them. He will be forever loved and remembered by many. He is survived by his loving wife: Sylvia Szuhaj Reed of Horseheads, NY; father-in-law: Ted Szuhaj of Lilly, PA; stepson: Dennis and Christa Phillips and Jay's beloved granddaughter, Haylie Phillips of Rome, PA, and Patrick Phillips of Portage, PA; sisters and brothers-in-law: Louise Sindall of Bel Air, MD, and Nancy and Robert J. Golden of Baldwinsville, NY; brother: Daniel K. Reed of Horseheads, NY; nieces and nephews: Kenneth (Fran) Grogan, Eileen (Robert) Doran, Catherine Golden, Robert J. (Ika) Golden Jr., Maureen (Mark) Murphy, Michael (Amy) Golden, Joanne (Daniel) Neumire, and Suzanne Maloney; grand nieces and grand nephews: Cassie Lynn Doran, Patrick Doran, Michael Grogan, Andrew Grogan, Danielle Wolcott, Nicole Wolcott, Courtney Neumire, Ciara Marie Murphy, Christiane Murphy, Conor Murphy, Charles Golden, and Anthony Golden; special friend: Sister Marie Michael Miller, SSJ of Elmira, NY, and a host of friends. Family and friends are invited to call the Van Buskirk-Lynch Funeral Home, Mill St. and Grand Central Ave., Horseheads, NY, Thursday, July 20, 2000 from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday, July 21, 2000 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home, Saturday at 9 am. Jay's Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by the Rev. Richard Farrell on Saturday, July 22, 2000 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Our Mother Church, Horseheads, NY. Interment in St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded Mr. Reed. Jay may be remembered through memorial contributions to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, 555 E. Market Street, Elmira, NY 14901.
