John Sampson Obituary

SAMPSON, John S.

Of Elmira Heights, NY, formerly of Waverly, NY passed away on Thursday evening, February 11, 2016 at the age of 83. John was born April 1, 1932 in Sayre, PA, a son of the late Alvin and Pearl Zimmer Sampson. John is preceded in death by an infant son and a daughter; brothers, Herbert, Harry "Lindy", Sam "Junior", David, and sister Charlotte. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Christine Blake Viselli Sampson; children; RoseMarie (Harold) Renninger of Ulster, PA, John Alvin Sampson of Waverly, NY, and Terri (Tom) Ersley of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Michael Blaine, Jason Sampson, Alicia and Kristen Ersley; great grandchildren, Nyla and Michael Jr.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He served his country honorably during the Korean War with the US Army. He was retired after 33 years from American Bridge Works. John was a lifetime member of VFW Post 8104, as well as a lifetime member of Cayuta Hose Fire Co. in Waverly, NY and an avid bowler and ball player. The family will welcome relatives and friends to Sullivan's Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin St., at Rt. 13, Horseheads, NY on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 from 3PM-5PM with Memorial Services and Military Honors to follow. John will be laid to rest at Woodlawn National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Those wishing to remember John, please consider memorial contributions to Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA, State Route 352, Elmira, NY 14903. The family would like to thank Elcor, Colonial Ridge North for taking excellent care of him during his stay. Kristin, I'm so very sorry about your Grampa. I know how close you were to him. From the pictures I saw it looks like you will have wonderful memories of him, and they will bring you great comfort. Thinking of you.

Uncle John, was a kind soft spoken man with a big heart.He was always willing to help others.loved his daily visits for coffee @WalMart. Rest in peace Uncle John, you will be free now to walk, talk and be with your family members.I will always remember our Sunday visits with you and Aunt Christine.you will always be in my heart. Rest in peace!!
