Julian Gottlieb Obituary

Gottlieb, Julian A.

"Jules"

Elmira: Age 84, passed away at his home, surrounded by his children, on Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Jules was born in Wilkes-Barre PA, a son of Paul and Katherine (Gavron) Gottlieb. He is predeceased by his brothers, Benjamin and Leo Gottlieb and sisters, Mary Mahon, Stella Ronde, and Lucy Krugal. Jules is survived by his children, Katherine Collins and husband Chris, Elmira, Julie "Schoochy" Colunio, with Mike MacInerney, Elmira, Mary Ellen "Ellie" Walker with Tom McInerny, Pine City, Ryan Gottlieb, Endicott; grandchildren, Gregg (Jen Schwartz) Rogers, Megan (Frank) Bundy, Molly Rogers, Michael, Nicholas and Anna Colunio, Sean, Brian and Kevyn Walker, Julian Gottlieb and Sumayah; great-grandson Brian Rogers; brother, Walter Gottlieb, Wilkes-Barre; along with several nieces and nephews. Jules was a U S Army veteran. A teacher with the Elmira City School District for 35 years, he taught History at Parley Coburn Junior High and then at Southside High School, from where he retired. He had a positive impact on his students and was known by all for his sense of humor and "corny" jokes. Jules was a standout football and basketball player in high school. He earned a football scholarship to Mansfield University, and after one season of football he switched to basketball, earning a scholarship for that sport as well. During the 1960's Jules was involved with the Jewish Community Center in many different positions. He was day camp director, teen program director and coach. In his position as basketball coach his teams went on to win several statewide tournaments. A truly devout Christian, Jules will be remembered for his volunteer work, charitable donations and compassion to all living creatures. Jules loved life and remained upbeat until the end. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water Street, Elmira on Friday, March 7, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 10:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Prayers & thoughts to Jules family. I taught with Jules for 15 years at Parley Coburn. As a beginning teacher, he offered advice & Helped me adapt to a new job & living in a new Cityn he opened up an ice cream store on S. Main St. Our youngest daughter "made" us stop everytime we drove by. Quite often there was no charge. He just enjoyed visiting with her. Jules always had a joke or "story" to share in the faculity room. Rest in peace my friend!

To The Entire Gottlieb Family,

Kate & I are saddened to hear of Your Dads Passing. What a great sense of humor that he obviously carried throughout his life. Jokingly, the last time (a year or so ago) I saw Mr. Gottlieb and I thanked him. He said for what? I said, for teaching me there were 52 states. His reply, "get out of here Siglin". He laughed. May He Rest In Peace. God Bless Julian.
