Lewis Poppleton Obituary

Poppleton, Lewis G., Jr.

Age 77 of Elmira, NY, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2013 at home from Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born on August 25, 1936 in Elmira, NY to the late L. Glenn and Gertrude (Geisser) Poppleton. Lew was predeceased by his first wife, Joan (Mirich) Poppleton and brother, Richard Poppleton. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen W. Poppleton of Elmira; children, L. Glenn Poppleton of NYC, Margaret (Scott) Poppleton Sherman of GA, Alan (Lynn) Poppleton of Elmira, Patrick (Lisa Chalk) Poppleton of Elmira, William (Angela) Poppleton of TX, Elizabeth (Mike) Poppleton Isenberg of MI, Amy (Brian LeBaron) Poppleton of Elmira and JR (Julie) Westervelt of Elmira; grandchildren, Alex, Marc, Tyler, Merrick, Alan Jr., Amanda, Brian, Benjamin, Olivia, Ella, William Jr., Zachary, Alexandra, Dominick, Vincent, Josette, Kaylee and Kyle; great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Aiden; sisters, Suzanne Poppleton Hallowell of Rochester, NY and Barbara Poppleton Braunstein of VA; along with several nieces and nephews. Lew attended St. Bonaventure and then served honorably in the US Army where he trained in IBM programming in NYC, Germany and France. He was a local retired businessman, who spent most of his life raising his seven children with his first wife Joan and operating several service stations, The Ice Company of Elmira and three Convenient Food Marts. He was an active member in the Elmira Jay Cees and was instrumental in forming the West Elmira Volunteer Fire Department after being elected Fire Commissioner. Lew spent his later years traveling the country with wife Kathy and canine companion "Casey Too" in his favorite Prevost Bus then settling down in Port St. Lucie, FL until recently moving home due to his illness. It was Lew's wish that no prior calling hours be held and that a Celebration of Life be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to CareFirst Hospice, 11751 E. Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830 or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 E. Ohio St., Suite 304, Chicago, IL 60611. Arrangements have been entrusted to the James D. Barrett Funeral Home.

I remember Uncle Lew when I was about 7 years old and he was 14 or so and we were playing catch with a regulation baseball. He told me to throw it to him as hard as I could and he would catch the ball with his bare hands. I wound up and chucked it with all my might and he grabbed it bare-handed and let out a big laugh and asked if that was all I had! I thought he was Superman. You know what? I still do...
Rest in Blessed Peace Uncle Lew.

Lew and I were best friends right from the beginning, when we lived two doors apart on Hoffman Street. So many happy memories of growing up together, playing cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, messing about in Hoffman Creek, walking to George Washington School together. Here is a photo I took of him at age 11 - a skinny, red-haired boy, always good fun to be with and a loyal friend. Our paths diverged as we met life in different ways, but he and Joan did visit Jennie and me in England later on. I'm so sorry to hear of his death: his family and friends have lost someone whose good humor and kindness lightened their world and made it a better place.
