Lorenz Gerstel Obituary
Age 71, of Corning, NY, died on Sunday, October 19, 2008. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at Congregation Shomray Hadath, 1008 W. Water St., Elmira, on Thursday, October 23, at 11:00 a.m., Abraham Golos officiating. Interment will follow at Franklin Street Cemetery, Elmira. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing may make memorials to Falck Cancer Center, 555 Roe Ave., Elmira, 14901; or to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 945 County Rt. 64, Elmira, 14903. Lorie is survived by his loving wife, Dian Gerstel; daughters, Camille Gerstel and Deborah Gerstel, both of Oakland, CA; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Gerstel and Eric Samson; son and daughter-in-law, Brian Gerstel and Vickie Feldman of Philadelphia, PA; two grandsons, Jacob Samson and Kyle Samson. Lorie was a member of Congregation Shomray Hadath, past President of its Talmud Torah Board and Chairman of its House Committee, was a board member of Family Services Society of Steuben Co. and Catholic Charities of Steuben Co., a member of Corning Chamber of Commerce, past President of the Board of Steuben Co. Council on Alcoholism, member of Steuben Co. 911 Committee, Corning Rotary Club, and a former member of the Downtown Health Club in Elmira. Lorie was the owner of Noah's Ark on Market St., Corning. He was most proud to be the recipient of the 2007 Dee Dee Cavaluzzi Entrepreneur Award of Corning, NY Arrangements by BAKER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.

Lorie was a wonderful man and his presence on Market Street and throughout the community will be greatly missed. Although my time in Corning was relatively brief, my conversations with Lorie always made me feel like he knew me forever. I'm a better person for knowing him.

Dian, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Lorie was a huge help in setting up Island Health & Fitness in Ithaca and HealthWorks in Painted Post. During this time he made it easy to become his friend. Lorie will truely be missed but never forgotten.

Dian: I am so sorry for your loss. Lori was a wonderful friend of mine, of many of us. It was always a priority of mine when I was back home to catch up with him what was the latest in the biz'. Aside from his friendship, to me Lorie exemplified the best of small town merchants: trust, service and passion for the customer.
