M. Elizabeth "Liz" Alamo, 101, highly regarded resident of 7 Athens St. Waverly, N.Y. passed away Sunday, September 18, 2016 at her home. Elizabeth was born in Waverly, N.Y. on April 23, 1915 the daughter of the late Domenick Alamo Sr. and Mary Constantine Alamo. A graduate of Waverly High School and St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Elmira, N.Y., she received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. where she majored in medical and surgical supervision and administration. Miss Alamo served on the nursing staff of the Tioga General Hospital in Waverly, the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre and on the U.S. Public Health Service Staff in New York City. She was a former head nurse of the Clinical Research Unit of Staten Island, N.Y. and later became nursing arts instructor at the St. James Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell, N.Y. and instructor in nursing arts at Alfred University. She also served as school nurse at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. Miss Alamo retired as Educational Director of Nursing Services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath, N.Y. where she served for 25 years. She assisted in preparations for the opening of nursing schools at Alfred University and Corning Community College. During her nursing career, Miss Alamo completed advanced work in nursing at Pennsylvania State College, Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. the University of Rochester, Fordham University and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She also taught classes for the New York State Nurses Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She was a member of a team of nurses representing the New York State Nurses Association in a work-study program in health clinics in Russia. For many years, Miss Alamo visited the sick and home bound and often drove for those in need. A devoted communicant of St. James Catholic Church in Waverly, she was actively involved in all aspects of her parish life as well as the greater valley community. Miss Alamo dedicated her time and talents to help with bereavement and senior citizens luncheons and monthly fellowship meals at St. James Church. She took part and also assumed leadership responsibilities with many non-profit organizations in the area and was active in pro-life efforts, valley revitalization and the Red Cross Blood Bank. Miss Alamo was formerly honored as Woman of the Year by the Valley Beta Sigma Phi Chapter at their annual Founders Day banquet as a woman who was always there for others in need. Additionally, Miss Alamo was honored by the Sullivan Trail Chapter Valley Branch of the American Red Cross for more than 50 years of service. Miss Alamo enjoyed traveling and visited many countries in Europe and Asia. She enjoyed music, reading, volunteering at the Tioga Nursing Home and providing a social ministry for peace and justice and advocacy for the poor and disenfranchised.
She is survived by: her sister, Isabelle "Susie" O'Hara of Sun City, AZ. as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank Alamo, John Alamo, Domenick "Mike" Alamo Jr. and Anthony Alamo, and by her sisters, Anne Garfield, Pauline Bean, Lena Alamo and Mary Keenan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Waverly, N.Y. The family will receive friends following the Mass at the church. Interment will be private in St. James Cemetery, Waverly, NY. Memorial contributions are suggested to be directed to Food For The Poor, Inc., 6401 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, FL. 33073 in M.
