Norma Olin Obituary
Norma Mae (Rafferty) Age 79, of Alpine, NY, passed away Friday, April 2, 2004, at Robert Packard Hospital in Sayre, PA. Norma was born in Elmira, NY, July 26, 1924, daughter of George and Gladys (Evertts) Rafferty. She was a graduate of Southside High School, Class of 1942. She married her husband of 58 years, Floyd E. Olin, Jr., August 31, 1946. Norma is predeceased by her parents; brother, Richard Rafferty; and granddaughter, Michelle Strong. She is survived by her husband, Floyd; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Steve Strong of Snellville, GA, and Melanie and Edson Flewelling of Church Hill, TN; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Norma Olin of Milford, NH, David and Norela Olin of Canandaigua, NY, and Jeffrey and Marla Olin of Bath, NY; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Charles McDermott of Lakeland, FL, Beverly and Richard Burger of Canisteo, NY, and Mary Lou and Michael Masin of Lowman, NY; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Mary Rafferty of Gainesville, FL; and Robert and Genevieve Rafferty of Elmira, NY; several nieces and nephews; an aunt, Ada (Rafferty) Weston, age 88, of Elmira; and an uncle, Philip Rafferty, age 94, of Elmira. Norma retired as Postmaster at Alpine, NY, after serving 25 years. She was a Life Time member of Southern Light Chapter #460 Order of the Eastern Star, also serving as Past Matron. She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary of Odessa, NY, and a member of the Odessa Baptist Church. Over the last several years, Norma volunteered at the Dutton Peterson Library in Odessa. During the few years they resided in Zephyrhills, FL; following their retirement, Norma organized the first "Schuyler County" picnic, an event that is still being celebrated annually in Zephyrhills. Norma loved crafts and was always making items for gifts to children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family members and friends. She especially enjoyed making porcelain dolls and quilts. She and her husband were avid gospel music fans. Norma arranged bus transportation for area fans to travel from Odessa to several Gaither Homecoming concerts held in the region in the last several years. Most of all, Norma loved GOD and her Lord and Savior Jesus and did her best to show that love to all those with whom she came into contact. Friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 So. Main St., Horseheads, on Sunday, April 4, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m. Her service will take place there at the funeral home on Monday, April 5, 2004, at 11 a.m. with her Pastor, the Rev. Jeremy Spencer, officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. NOTICE: Officers and Member of Southern Light Chapter #460 O.E.S. will gather at the Barber Funeral Home on Sunday Evening at 7:30 p.m. to conduct a memorial service for their departed sister.
