Norma Sears Obituary

Norma P. Sears (Stanton)

Horseheads, NY - Age 95, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on June 21, 2021. She was born on December 13, 1925 in Elmira, New York, to Floyd and Almyra Stanton. Norma graduated from Southside High School in 1943. In her younger years, Norma supported our World War II troops by working for both the Navy and the Army. She married the love of her life, Glenn W. Sears, Sr. on July 11, 1945, while he was on leave from overseas. Sadly, Glenn passed away, June 22, 1983, after thirty-eight years of marriage. Norma raised four boys and went to work for the Bookmobile once they were all in school. When her daughter Jane was born, Norma stayed home again until Jane started school. For the next twenty years, Norma worked in the library at Horseheads High School, retiring in 1989. Norma enjoyed a variety of activities including knitting, sewing, shopping, dining out, reading, and traveling. She considered herself most fortunate to visit Okinawa, Japan; England, Scotland, Ireland, and Norway, collecting bookmarks and mementos from everywhere she went. Mom lived her life by always putting others first. As her daughter-in-law Aletha once described her: "The person willing to go without so her family could have everything, expecting nothing in return." After her retirement from the Horseheads School District, Norma served as a Board member for both Chemung County ARC and the Horseheads Free Library. Norma also volunteered at the Arctic League, Meals on Wheels, and Second Place East. Additionally, she was a member of the Horseheads Women's Club, UCT (United Commercial Travelers), and Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Norma was predeceased by her husband Glenn, son David Sears and granddaughter Janna Sears. She is survived by her children : Glenn (Judy) Sears, Aletha Sears, Jack (Letricia) Sears, Thomas Sears, and Jane Burke; grandchildren, David (Miranda) Sears, Lily & Aidan; Brett (Katie) Sears, Priscilla & Lydia; Brandy (Brandon) Reagan, Kendall, Will, Hunter, Bryce & Braxton; Danielle (Josh) Burke, Kylah; and Kevin Burke. Additionally, she is survived by several nieces and nephews as well as cherished friends and her dearly loved church family. The family would like to offer their deepest thanks to "her ladies": Kelly, Keanna, Nikki, Jill, Britney, and Toddy who made it possible for her to stay in her home. "I love my ladies. They are all so good to me!" A special thanks to everyone at Care First who also provided Norma and her family with care and comfort. In lieu of flowers, donations in Norma's name may be sent to The Chemung County Humane Society, 2435 St Route 352, Elmira, NY 14903 or Arctic League, Inc., 249 W. Clinton St, Elmira, NY 14901. In Mom's famous words, "I've had a good life! Go have fun!" Condolences and words of comfort may be expressed at Norma's Book of Memories at www.sullivansfuneralhome.com
