Catherine Mary Edelen

1930 - 2025

Catherine Mary Edelen, formerly of Camp Springs, Maryland, passed away on February 28, 2025.

Catherine was born on January 7, 1930, in Washington, DC. She was the daughter of the late John S. Dyer and Edna E. Murphy, both from Southern Maryland. Catherine was a descendant from the Dyer family that settled in Piscataway, Maryland in the mid-1600s.

Catherine attended Saint Cecilia's Academy in Washington DC, where she was the honor graduate of her class. At age 19, she married James A. Edelen on February 12, 1949. Catherine and James were married for 66 years until James's death in 2015. Catherine's true love of her life was her family. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. Catherine had eight children, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, and sixteen great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons, James D. Edelen, Ronald A. Edelen and one daughter, Kathleen E. Edelen. Catherine is survived by five children, Joseph G. Edelen, Rosemary A. Waddell, John A. Edelen, Elizabeth M. Hitchens, and Michael C. Edelen.

Catherine was a devout Catholic and a long-time member of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Easton, Maryland. Catherine loved to travel. Her adventures took her all over Europe, the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Along with her husband James, they loved to spend time in the West Virginia mountains, and seasonal visits to the Florida Keys. Catherine was an avid reader and never lost her desire to see a good cartoon movie. Catherine led a very active life. Continued later in life to exercise and remain mobile. She was a long-time member of the Easton YMCA, where she took swim aerobics and made many friends. Catherine rode a bicycle for many years to stay fit. She loved to watch her grandchildren and do activities with them all. Mom Edelen was dearly loved by all her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for people to make donations to Talbot Hospice.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home in Easton, MD from 10am - 12pm. A mass of Christian burial will follow at 1pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 13209 Church Ln, Cordova, MD 21625. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
