Delores J. Bowens died peacefully at her home on May 13, 2025 in St. Michaels, Maryland following a long Illness.
Delores was born on November 15, 1943 in Fitzgerald, Georgia to Mable Daniels Bowens and Leroy Bowens. She was the youngest of three girls.
She was educated in Fitzgerald, Georgia. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Savannah State College in Savannah, Georgia in 1964. She often spoke of how her dad solved math problems with her when she was a child. Delores was crowned Homecoming Queen as Miss Savannah State College for the year 1963-64. She was affiliated with the following organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, Kappa Mu Epsilon, an honor society in Mathematics. She was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and was a member of the NAACP. She earned an MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Massachusetts in 1970.
Delores started her career at IBM in Washington, DC in 1966. She was assigned to the NASA Division of IBM. A mathematical genius, she was second generation of the women who were heralded in the movie, Hidden Figures.
She worked for Mobil Oil and Texaco as a Financial Analyst in New York. Upon receiving her MBA, she commenced her Investment Banking career at Goldman Sachs and was named Vice President of Corporate Real Estate Investments.
Delores loved to entertain at her beach house in Saltaire on Fire Island, New York and traveled the world with her friends.
Upon her retirement from Goldman Sachs, Delores moved to the Maryland's Eastern Shore in the late eighties, where she oversaw the building of her home. She was on the Board of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and the Friends of the Talbot County Library. She worked for Habitat for Humanity and served as a Talbot County Master Gardener. Delores was instrumental in bringing the statue of Frederick Douglass to the Talbot County Court House Courtyard. She loved tennis and traveled annually to New York to attend the US Open for many years.
Delores is survived by her nephew, Stacey Brayboy, cousin, Freda Hunter of Atlanta and her siblings, Carol Pressley of Lakewood, New Jersey with a host of cousins, along with her special friends, Irene E. Elmore and Charles P. Watson all of whom cherished their relationship with her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Shirley Bowens Moss, Gwendolyn Bowens Brayboy and niece Jacquelyn Moss.
A Celebration of Life is set for Thursday, August 28, 2025 from 3-5 p.m. at the St. Michaels Community Center.
A huge thanks and much gratitude are extended to the Caregivers of Aging at Home who made it possible for Delores to remain in her home.
