Sidney Smith Obituary

ST. MICHAELS - Sidney "Sid" Scott Smith, 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center in Easton, with loved ones by his side. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Sid was the son of the late Laura and W. Scott Smith.
He graduated from The Haverford School, Haverford, PA, where he excelled in sports, particularly swimming, track, and football. He studied Civil Engineering for a year and half at the University of Pennsylvania before being drafted into the Korean War. Sid enlisted in the Army Air Corps and although never saw active duty, he served in the Corps intelligence unit.
Following his military service, Sid re-enrolled at Penn to study Architecture. While there, he continued his collegiate swimming career, specializing in the 50-yard freestyle, for which he held the school record. It was also at Penn that he met Barbara Hiser, who later became his wife. Sid studied under the renowned architect Louis Kahn and upon graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture, joined Kahn's prestigious firm.
He eventually established a private practice in Moorestown, NJ, specializing in residential, commercial, and municipal design. A very talented designer, Sid received numerous awards and honors for his projects. He was proud to have mastered his CADD system at age 70. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and was licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Florida, until officially retiring in 2015. He also was a Certified Professional Planner.
Sid was an accomplished singer and guitarist and also played banjo and autoharp. His other passion was sports, particularly following his beloved Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. While raising his children, Sid was an active community volunteer, Cub Scout leader, and Little League coach.
He maintained dual residences in Moorestown and Long Beach Island before moving full time to Chestertown, MD, and then finally relocating to St. Michaels 20 years ago to be closer to family. Sid loved sailing his wooden Penguin on Barnegat Bay, his O'Day daysailer on Worton Creek, and his Sunfish sailboat on Solitude Creek.
He was an active member of the St. Michaels Rotary Club, Christ Church in St. Michaels, and enjoyed working out at the Cardiopulmonary Rehab Center in Easton. He was a volunteer driver for Partners in Care and a Waterfowl Festival volunteer.
Sid is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara A. Smith; daughter, Deborah A. (Douglas) Collison; son, Russell W. Smith; two grandchildren: Mason Smith; Julia Smith; and a brother, W. Scott Smith Jr. He was predeceased by son, Sidney S. Smith Jr.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church in St. Michaels on Friday, May 18 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the St. Michaels Rotary Club Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 394, St. Michaels, MD 21663.
