Tilghman Hubbert Obituary

CAMBRIDGE - Tilghman Sewell Hubbert Jr. of Cambridge, Md., passed peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Dec. 14, 2017. Mr. Hubbert was born on May 16, 1942, to the late T. Sewell Hubbert Sr. and Gertrude H. Hubbert.
Sewell grew up in Cambridge. After graduating Cambridge High in 1960, Sewell attended the University of Maryland at College Park for a short time.
Due to the passing of his father, Sewell was pulled back to the family business, E.S Hubbert & Son Inc. Sewell would run the family business until 1985.
At this time, Sewell left the family business to pursue other business adventures. He was owner of Snow's Turn Market for some time. One of his most passionate business ventures was being a founding member of the Bank of the Eastern Shore (BOES). He decided to go in this business after sitting on the board of Union Trust bank.
He took great pride while serving as a board member of BOES. As one of his last business ventures, Sewell was owner/operator of Madison Bay Marina & Campground. This was very close to Sewell's heart. This was a business that combined his two loves of business and boating.
When Sewell was not conducting business, he enjoyed his time on the water. He could be found several days of the week at the Cambridge Yacht Club working or socializing on his boat. He loved for fellow boaters to stop by to have a drink.
It was not uncommon for him to invite newfound as well as old friends out for a small cocktail cruise at the spur of the moment to enjoy the Choptank River.
Another one of Sewell's love's comes from his childhood, which was vacationing in Florida. He spent his childhood years visiting the family home on Sanibel Island. As years went on and after many trips to Florida, Sewell bought a wintertime home on Little Gasparilla Island. Again, this was a place where he was quick to invite friends to stop in and enjoy a relaxing time of island living.
In his later years and needing to keep his mind sharp in typical Sewell fashion, he took on a hobby that allowed him to communicate with fellow boaters as well as earn some extra cash. He taught himself to repair nautical compasses, which evolved into East Coast Compass.
Sewell was a man that believed in family and tradition. He followed in his grandfather's and father's footsteps by becoming a Mason. He was a member of Cambridge Lodge #66 and Sewell was past master in 1975.
Being a prominent businessman in Dorchester County, he sat on many boards. One position that would always bring a smile to his face would be the Nathan Foundation. He enjoyed being involved in giving money back to his community.
He was also a member of the Zion Church and Sons of the American Legion Post 91 of Cambridge.
Sewell is survived by a wife, Victoria Owens Hubbert; two sons, T. Sewell Hubbert III (Tee), and Corey Hubbert and wife Amanda of Cambridge. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Kaitlin Hubbert of Princeton, W.Va., Oakley Hubbert of Cambridge; a stepson, Robert James Hastings and wife Kelly of Sharptown, Md.; step-grandson, Robert James Hasting II; a sister, Dodie Bromwell and husband Robert; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home P.A. in Cambridge, with Rev. Michael Hurley officiating. Interment will be private. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a Masonic service at 1 p.m. Following the service, family and friends are invited to join in a Celebration of Life at the Cambridge Yacht Club.
Honorary pallbearers: David Orem, Harvey Davis, William "Q-Ball' Parks, Don Heintzleman, Al Jolicoeur, Elmer Willey, Bill Silverthorne and Otis Faulkner.
Memorial contributions may be made to Baywater Animal Rescue on 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
