Dorothy Embrey Newman
Dorothy Embrey Newman of Culpeper, formerly of Manassas, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, at the amazing age of 94, just 20 days short of her 95th birthday.
Born on November 10, 1930, Dorothy or Dot as many referred to her, was the oldest child of Alvin A. and Marjorie O. Embrey. She spent most of her childhood in the Franconia and Alexandria, Virginia areas, having graduated in 1948 from Mount Vernon High School. Upon finishing school, her work adventure included studying nursing, working for the Department of the Army and the State Department. In 1954, she married James D. Newman to which his U. S. Air Force stint took them to Texas and California where Dorothy worked as a civilian employee at both bases. While in California, her first son, Donny, was born in April 1955 and they stayed in California until the spring of 1957, then returned to Virginia, which would be her home state for the next 68 years. Once settled in Virginia, Dot worked for the DMV and provided door-to-door census taking, all while growing her family with the addition of Dave in 1958 and Bert in 1963. In 1965 the dream of her life was completed. After much research and thought, the house she designed was completed and would remain her sanctuary for 57 years. In 1968 she became a bookkeeper at Marsteller Junior High School and later moved to Prince William County School Board main office as a benefits specialist, retiring in 1992. After ending her full-time career, she volunteered for the forest service, became a Master Gardener, and enjoyed working with plants anywhere she could. In 2022, she left her dream home and began the next journey at The Culpeper Assisted Living. During her stay there she enjoyed the care and support of their staff and community.
Dorothy is survived by her brother, Harold Embrey and wife, Mary of Orange Park, Fla.; her sons, Dave and wife, Ann, Bert and wife, Jan all of Madison, Va.; daughter-in-law, Diane of Front Royal, Va.; grandchildren, Dustin, Ashley and Tyler; great-grandchildren, Gwyneth, Adler, Finley, and a special great-grandchild, Cooper, on the way; along with numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Donny; and her granddaughter, Amanda.
Dorothy loved life and was an avid genealogy research person. Her ability and effort to connect pure strangers together was unheard of. In her mind, we were possibly all one big family.
The family welcomes all of Dorothy's family and friends to join them on Thursday, October 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 31 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Midland, Va. Interment will follow at Mount Holly Cemetery, Sumerduck.
