Patricia Drum Ammons
Patricia Drum Ammons, 75, of Culpeper, Virginia went home to her heavenly father on the morning of October 6, 2021.
Born June 8, 1946 in Washington DC, she is preceded in death by her parents USN (Ret.) Captain Henry William Drum and Mary Serra Drum of Mattituck, NY; her nieces Dana Bitgood and Christy D'Camera and her nephew Chris Bitgood.
Patricia was one of 8 children and moved over 20 times as the child of a Navy Captain. She met her future husband Jim Ammons in 1964 at the Hot Shoppes in 7 Corners, Va., and continued her travels as the wife of an Army Officer.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim Ammons of Jeffersonton; son Jeff Ammons (Kristin), daughter Katie Cross (Eric) and her cherished grandchildren Joshua Ammons, Elizabeth Ammons and Caleb Ammons. She is also survived by her sisters, Diane Sandusky, Kathy Bitgood, Cauly Redenius, and Bridget Drum; her brothers Henry William Drum Jr. (Duffy), Michael Drum and Timothy Drum and her numerous much-loved nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ammons, as she was known to her kindergarten students across the region, taught most recently at Emerald Hill Elementary in Culpeper County and Virginia Run Elementary in Fairfax County. During her almost 35 year teaching career, she also taught in Germany, Panama, Texas, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania. The quintessential kindergarten teacher, she also served as a surrogate grandmother to many and she oftentimes remembered her former students and would greet them by name well into their 30's and 40's.
She continued her love of children and was involved in various ministries at Mountain View Community Church (MVCC) including the children's ministry, welcome team, pray team, restore team, and care team. In addition, she served on the MVCC Culpeper County women's prison ministry and the Bible Bus.
Pat never met a stranger and was blessed with the gift of gab and a welcoming demeanor. A published author, she was also known for her poems and her random acts of kindness to total strangers. As a teenager living in Hawaii, she learned to surf and developed a lifelong love of the water. She could be found body surfing in the Atlantic Ocean with her son-in-law Eric just days before her sudden death. She absolutely cherished and adored her grandchildren and would travel as much as possible to watch their sporting events, school events, and special life moments.
However, more than her love of children and even more than her overwhelming and all-encompassing love of her family and friends, Patricia loved Jesus Christ with a passion and took every opportunity to share his love, mercy and grace with others. Though we mourn her passing we have hope in the knowledge that we will see her again.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 17th from 2-5 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Home, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 18th at 11am at Mountain View Community Church, 16088 Rogers Rd., Culpeper, with Pastor Mark Jenkins officiating.
Interment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Mountain View Community Church to assist in the ongoing renovations of the MVCC Student Center. Pat invested and cherished in all things related to children during her life, so please help us in honoring her passion by investing in another generation of kids.
