Marie K. Thompson

Marie Katherine Thompson, longtime resident of Gering,passed away on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 at the Northfield Retirement Community at the age of 102.
A graveside service will be held at West Lawn Cemetery Saturday, Jan. 5. at 11 a.m. with Rev. Lauren Ekdahl officiating. Visitation for Marie will be held at Gering Memorial Chapel on Friday, Jan. 4. from 2 - 4 p.m. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com.
Marie was born on Feb. 25, 1910 in Kansas to Frederick and Katherine (Fertig) Ehrhardt. She married Carroll Nathan Thompson on Dec. 7, 1930 and they enjoyed 49 years of marriage before Carroll passed too soon in 1979. Over her many years of living life to the fullest, Marie was sports fan, dancer, card shark, competitive bowler, crafter, bookkeeper, police dispatcher, church member, good friend, and beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was known for her quick wit and mischievous laugh. Marie always said she would try anything…twice. Marie lived independently until the age of 97 and could be found visiting with neighbors and walking the stairs of her apartment building for exercise well into her 90s. She was a daily visitor to the Gering Senior Center for many years and enjoyed the friendships and activity it provided. In 2007, Marie moved into the Northfield Retirement Center apartments and later nursing care. Many thanks to the staff who helped keep Marie cared for, comfortable and playful. Despite enduring the loss of many friends over the years, Marie always expressed gratitude and contentment for each new day of health and life. Marie is survived by her daughters Adele Sue (Alan) Wood of Scottsbluff, and Kathryne Kuhl of Madison, Wis. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. She will be missed by all. Marie is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, son Leon Thompson and many wonderful friends. Though we are deeply saddened to see Marie go, we know that she is finally reunited with her husband Carroll and son Leon who have patiently waited for her to join them for some coffee, conversation and pancakes.
