Melva was born Dec. 23, 1911 in Kearney to William and Lila Ellen (McClure) Snowden. She attended school in Kearney and graduated from Kearney State College in 1934. She married John McDowll Roberts on Aug. 3, 1940 in Kearney. They lived in Dix until her husband's death when she moved to the Residency in Scottsbluff.
Melva was a member of the Dix Presbyterian Church, American association of University Women and many community activities in Kimball County. She and her husband co-chaired the March of dimes Fund early in the 1950's.
Melva was devoted to her family and supported them in all of their activities and visited them while they were away for extended periods at college and in the armed services. She was a great cook and meticulous housekeeper.
She was passionate about several things. She served as the local Democratic precinct chair. She was loyal to her friends and concerned about animals and their welfare. She advocated for the underdog and lost causes. Generous and charitable, she was always ready to give advice. She was a devout life-long Presbyterian, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for many years. She was bright and believed strongly in the value of education. She was a teacher for three years in Wyoming and Nebraska before her marriage and substituted for years after her marriage. She was totally adrift with anything mechanical - but no telephones.
She is survived by her sons: john Snowden Roberts, Wheatland, Wyo.; Hugh Andrew Roberts, Snowmass, Colo.; and William Donald Roberts, Rohnert Park, Cali.
Her parents, husband, brothers Eldridge Snowden, and Sidney Hughes Snowden and sister Lila Ellen Shrum preceded her in death.
