Robert Mark Thomas

September 7, 1956 - June 3, 2025

Robert Mark Thomas, of Morrill, passed away at the Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on June 3rd, 2025. A memorial service with friends and family will be held at a later date.

Robert Mark Thomas was born September 7, 1956. He was adopted by his loving parents Imogene (Imie) and Robert (Bob) Thomas shortly after his birth and came to live on the family farm in Sioux County, Nebraska.

Mark attended school in Morrill, graduating from Morrill High School in 1974. His proudest achievement during high school was becoming a Rotary Exchange Student and spending his exchange year in Australia, where he made several lifelong friends.

After high school, Mark attended Nebraska Western College (WNCC) in Scottsbluff, receiving his AA in 1976. He then attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY, receiving his BS in 1978 and an MS in Zoology and Physiology in 1980.

He taught at Western Nebraska Community College for several years in the early 1980s. Mark was diagnosed with MS in the 1980s and the disease prevented him from working steadily thereafter.

Mark married while he was at the University of Wyoming. The marriage produced two sons, Peter and Paul. He was later divorced and raised Peter and Paul with the help of his parents.

Mark was active in the Morrill community, attending the Morrill Methodist Church, being a member of the Morrill Rotary Club, serving on the board and as Treasurer of the Forest Lawn Cemetery, and being elected to and serving on the Morrill School Board. He was proud of the fact that he was a two-time Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary organization. He was also a member of the Morrill Masonic Lodge. Mark also contributed to numerous local projects, sometimes anonymously.

Mark was also very fond of animals. He had a basset hound named Brownie as a child. As an adult he had two dogs, Scruffy and Buster, and several cats, Percy, Frisky, Sheba, Leo, Max and Kaden. The animals were always rescue animals from the local humane society or animals in need of a good home.

Mark's father passed away in 1993. His mother Imogene died in 1999. He is survived by his sons, Peter (Andrea) Thomas of Statesboro, Georgia and Paul Thomas of Lincoln, Nebraska, Grandson Henry and numerous cousins. He was especially thankful for his cousin Joyce, who visited him regularly.

Memorials should be made to the Panhandle Humane Society or the Nebraska Children's Home.

Our friendship began when Bob and Imie were one of my host families as a Rotary Exchange student in 1966, and Mark was my young "brother." Subsequent visits back to Morrill by us, and to Australia by Mark, on three occasions including his own exchange year on Mt Tambourine in Queensland, ensured that we remained firm and respectful friends. Our sincere condolences to Peter and Paul.
