Leo Nowicki Obituary
Leo J. Nowicki, 99, a lifelong resident and devoted community leader of Sayreville, NJ, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025. Born on July 20, 1925, he lived a full and meaningful life, leaving a lasting impact on his family, friends, and community.
Leo was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He was awarded the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal (4 Stars), and the Philippine Liberation Medal (1 Star) for his dedicated service.
After his military service, Leo embarked on a distinguished 40-year career at Hercules Powder Company in Sayreville, where he also served as the long-standing president of Local 271 ICWU. Beyond his professional life, Leo was deeply involved in local politics and community organizations in Sayreville. He served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Construction Board of Appeals, and as Chairman of the Industrial Commission. He was also a member of the North Eastern Development Association, a Committee Member, and a Municipal Chairman in Sayreville. Leo also contributed to public service as a legislative aide to Senator Lawrence Weiss and a Commissioner with the Middlesex County Utilities Authority. He was asked by Senator Bill Bradley to serve on the Committee for the selection of West Point candidates, a testament to his character and reputation. His commitment to youth development was evident through his active role as a Boy Scout leader for Troup 68, where he was a merit badge counselor and adult advisor, and received the Order of the Arrow.
Leo is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Rose Nowicki. He is also survived by his sisters, Helen Wojewoda and Dorothy Spencer; his daughters, Cindy Dix, Mary Ann LaMaster and her husband Bob LaMaster, and Nancy Pamula and her husband John Pamula; and his son Richard's partner, Sharon Flannery. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Leo was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen; his brothers, Joseph and Edward; and his son, Richard Nowicki.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on July 19, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 221 MacArthur Avenue in Sayreville, followed by a burial service at St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery on Pulaski Avenue. A repast will be held at Camillo's, 31 MacArthur Avenue in Sayreville, following the burial. A Celebration of Life is planned for July 20, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Croton Rod and Gun Club, 31 Rake Factory Road, Flemington, NJ. July 20th would have marked Leo's 100th birthday.
