MAGEE, JR.
USN RETIRED "WES"
CDR. Alfred "Wes" Magee, Jr., 92, of Wilmington, died Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.
Wes was born December 14, 1916, in Weehawken, NJ, son of the late Alfred Wesley Magee and Lucy Worth Magee. His wife, Charlotte Norris Magee, and son-in-law, Jerry Ramsey, preceded him in death.
He attended the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School) and Rutgers University before serving in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot in both World War II in the Pacific Theatre and the Korean War. Wes was a highly decorated aviator, including the Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendations, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He also served aboard the USS Cowpens and the USS Bonhomme Richard. Upon retirement from the Navy, Wes piloted for Timme Corp during the 1960's.
In addition to being a member of the vestry of Church of the Good Shepard, Wes was a member of several retired military and pilot organizations, including, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), Navy League, WWII Remembered, and the Elks.
He is survived by four daughters, Patricia Vaughan (David) of Alexandria, VA, Judith Stant (Peter) of Redding, CT, Leslie Chinappi of Norfolk, VA, and Nancy Martin (John) of Weems, VA, son, A.W. "Pete" Magee, III of Alamosa, CO; stepdaughter, Susan Ramsey of Wilmington, NC; eleven grandchildren, including Matt Ramsey (Kristina) of Leland, NC; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:30pm to 8pm Friday, October 9, 2009, at Andrews Market Street Chapel.
A funeral service will be 11am Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Church of the Good Shepard with The Rev. G. Edward Dunlap and The Rev. Margaret Hutchins officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401, or Church of the Good Shepard, 515 Queen Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.
