CHARLES RAYMOND "SKIP" THORPE III

CHARLES THORPE Obituary

CHARLES RAYMOND THORPE, III "SKIP"

Charles Raymond Thorpe, III, affectionately known as Skip, of Calabash, died from cancer on March 29, 2013. He was born in Charlotte, NC, on November 4, 1944, and graduated from Kent State University in 1967. He worked for 45 years as an insurance adjuster, about half of those years as an in-house adjuster for insurance companies and the remaining and final years as an independent adjuster.

Skip is survived by his wife, Christie Erin Thorpe, of Calabash; his daughter, Cori Thorpe of Apopka, FL; his step-son, Matthew Young of Fort Mill, SC; his step-daughter, Michelle Boucher of Fort Mill, SC; two grandsons, Jordan Thorpe, of Leesburg, FL, and Joshua Brett Thorpe of Apopka, FL; two granddaughters, Amanda Christie Lawson of Fort Mill, SC, and Krista Renee Young of Fort Mill, SC; one great-granddaughter, Madison Laine Thorpe, of Leesburg, FL; and his sister, Terry Iglowski of Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his son, Brett Christian Thorpe, on June 1, 1996, and his granddaughter, Caitlin Jane Dykstra on December 3, 1996.

Skip was a friendly, outgoing person who never met a stranger and he was an excellent athlete all of his life. Upon retirement, he played golf almost every day, appearing at the golf up until two months before his death to hang out with his "buddies.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, specifically the members of the team: Sandy, Robin, Rhonda, Anne and Betty. The services they provided made it possible to grant Skip's wish to pass with dignity in his own home and their loving guidance and counsel were equally important, and often even more important. Christie especially extends her profound gratitude for their gentle way of allowing her to cling to the hope that sustained her while preparing her for the end. All of you were, and still are, thought of as a gift from God.

My deepest sympathies to Skip's family and friends...I just learned of Skip's death and it fills me with a profound sadness. Skip and I were close friends at Kent State for three years...laughing, dancing, playing sports, growing up. I last saw Skip in 1965 and yet he is still in my mind and heart...I would have loved to see him one more time, to share lives well lived. I hope you all know that Skip was a fantastic dancer. All the best...from an old friend.

I met Skip through the claims business, the way many other met him over his 45 years in the industry. Skip was one of the most intelligent and professional claims people I had ever met. He was also funny and whether he knew it or not, a mentor to me as I grew my company. Most importantly Skip was a friend I'll miss.

Ahhh, such memories of our years together in Neptune Beach: some warm and wonderful, some cryptic but funny, still others tragic and sad. But memories still of shared times, and a warm and sweet place deep inside of our friendship. With love and a heavy heart for you, Christie. Toni

When I first met Skip I was playing tennis with his son Brett at Big Tree Racquet Club. Skip quickly gave me some pointers on my tennis game. Soon after that Brett and I became best friends. Skip would go to all are tennis matches and always have something funny to say .At the time Brett and I were( know it all TEENAGERS) but Skip was quick-witted smart remarks to put us in are place but in a fun way. Skip was a great Dad, Great Tennis Player, Great Tennis Coach and Brett and I loved that fact he had a big kid side of him that was so fun. R.I.P Skip

after years of giving Skip a hardtime we both grew and had our own unique kind of relationship....some years later but also years ago a casual acquaintance of mine pointed out to me that in conversation I always say stuff like" going to visit my parents" or"at my folks house" so that Fathers day I mentioned it to Skip, we had a moment and I called him "dad" adn told him I loved him.....neither of us r mushy guys, so that never happened again and as sad as the fact is if he were here I wouldnt like the rest of the family be hugging and telling him I love him everyday....face it neither of us that kind of guy......that however doesnt mean I(we) dont have that sentiment so now sadly for only the 2nd time EVER I say to my pal Skip I LOVE YOU DAD R.I.P
