Daisy Batten Obituary

DAISY SAVAGE BATTEN

'MS. DAISY'

After a brief illness, Daisy Savage Batten, 88, formerly of Lilesville, passed into the loving and caring hands of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 30.

Born Daisy Irene Savage on December 10, 1919, she was the youngest daughter and last surviving child of King Earnest and Priscilla Mariah Savage of Rose Hill, NC.

Daisy was a dedicated homemaker and wife to her husband, Troy Marvin Batten, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1993, and a loving mother to her five children.

One son, Troy Marvin Batten, Jr. preceded her in death in 1984.

She is survived by daughters Ann Batten Phillips of Goldsboro, NC; Beth Batten Upton (Jack) of Wilmington, NC; and, sons Donald Batten (Margaret) of Gainesville, GA; and Robert Batten (Dottie) of Concord, NC; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Daisy was a woman who loved the Lord and lived her faith. She was a member of Lilesville United Methodist Church and was active in all facets of its Christian ministries until her declining health necessitated she be closer to her family for care. She loved her many church friends. She was a Lay Speaker and spoke on many occasions at her church and the other churches in the Lilesville United Methodist Charge. She was a member of the Administrative Board, the Women's Society of Christian Service and the Ladies Sunday School Class. As a resident of Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington, she continued to worship the Lord and witness to whomever she met.

As a testimonial to their faith and devotion to Daisy, her daughter Beth Upton and the entire Upton family cared for her untiringly and without hesitation during her time in Wilmington.

Daisy had a life-long passion for learning. As a child, she loved school but was unable to complete her education due to family illnesses and deaths. After her children were mature, she returned to school and obtained her high school diploma, and entered the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she received her BA degree in 1976. Until just before her death, she was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and looked forward to reading the daily newspaper.

She was an avid gardener who loved to grow and nurture her garden in the spring and her flowers year-round. She was also a true-blue UNC basketball fan.

The funeral will be at the Lilesville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 2 at 2:00 PM. The Reverend Norm Jones will officiate. Interment will be at Anson Memorial Park following the service.

The family will receive friends at Leavitt Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 and at the church one hour before the service.

The family wishes to express its appreciation to the doctors and staff of the Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington, NC for the loving care they provided "Ms. Daisy" during her time with them.

Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Ill. 60601-7633

Leavitt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
