David Bachman Obituary

DAVID STANLEY

BACHMAN, M.D.

David Stanley Bachman, M.D., of Wilmington, NC. passed away in the presence of his loving family on the morning of January 1st, 2011. Born

April 22, 1944 in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Dr. Henry & Ilse Bachman.

David and his wife Bunnie shared 44 joyful & loving years together involved in activities such as flying private aircrafts, boating, fishing and raising two wonderful sons, Eric and Kevin. Other interests include an avid supporter of the Wilmington Symphony & WHQR as well as an enthusiasm for a broad spectrum of music from jazz to classical, rock'n roll and the blues. A connoisseur of fine cuisine, David immensely enjoyed cooking for family and friends.

David was a graduate of Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and then earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins Medical School. There he continued his residency and also fulfilled two fellowships in both adult and pediatric neurology. From 1970-72 he served as a Medical Officer at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

In 1982, David joined Wilmington Health Associates and established its Neurology Department. He served as Wilmington Health's president for ten years. A dedicated volunteer, he also set up and organized the New Hanover County Health Dept. Neurology Clinic which gave care to noninsured patients.

David was predeceased by his loving parents and devoted elder son Eric S. Bachman, MD. He is survived, in Wilmington, by his eternally adoring wife, Bunnie, his beloved son Dr. Kevin G. Bachman, wife Melissa and grandchildren Sophie and Joseph and in Cincinnati, Ohio, by daughter-in-law Sandra Bachman and twin grandchildren Eric & Ella. His surviving siblings are Atty. Barbara J. Bronson, Dr. Thomas Bachman and Jim Bachman, M.D.

David adored his patients. His dedication to them will surely live in their hearts. He lived his life in the spirit of Rudyard Kipling's poem "If'". A kindand even-tempered soul, he has left his generous footprints in the sands of New Hanover County.

In lieu of flowers donations in Dr. Bachman's name gratefully received by The Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins, Attn: Jolynn Hall, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 436, Baltimore, MD 21201 or the Tileston Health Clinic, 1607 Doctors Cr, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Dear Bunnie and Kevin,

I am so sorry for your loss of David. I feel fortunate to have known him professionally for more than 22 years. He was a great force for excellence in Neurological care and collegiality in our community. He was always generous with his knowledge and helpful to his colleagues. I will always remember what a great leader he was in forging a cooperative Neurology call schedule In the late 80’s and 90’s despite often challenging circumstances. Excellent patient care was always David’s focus. He created and maintained for at least 20 years our community’s best link to academic Neuroscience: the Neurology-Neurosurgery Conference. He will be missed by many, but particularly by the patients and families that he cared for so well.

Dear Bachman Family,
We were very saddened to learn of your husband's/father's passing. In the early 90's, our son needed a neurological workup. We were impressed as Dr. Bachman worked well with him and provided us with an accurate diagnosis. (We are very lucky.)
For over ten years, Anna worked as a home health nurse. Working with many of his patients of all ages, she had countless opportunities to hear loving stories from chronic patients' families. His communication was educational and respectful, which was noticed and appreciated.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you and yours during such a stressful time.

I am just at a loss of words which is something that never happens to me. I just learned today Janurary 16, of the passing of a dear man. Dr. Bachman was the first Dr. to get things right with my husbands health. After he started treating just pediatric patients we still stayed in touch with him. Every year arround Hunting Season I made sure that he had his Venison Meat. It was always a pleasure to share Gods gifts with him and others.I will really miss him. He was a very fine man and I know that Heaven has one more bright and shining star. In fact driveing to work for the last few mornings I have notice and very bright star that I have not seen before I know that must be him looking from the heavens. Please know our hearts go out to you during this trial. Dr. Bachman will never be forgotten. He left his legacy behind in each and everyone of his Family, Friends, and Patients. Sincerly Hattie Malpass

Dr. Bachman was the first to diagnose my daughter, Rebecca with Seizures. He was always so good with her and I can't thank him enough for the wonderful care he provided her. He was the only one who recognized and diagnosed her seizures when no one else did. He was always there and took such good care of her. We were both so sad to see him retire and now we are deeply saddened by his death. He was a wonderful physician with a genuine concern for his patients. There will never be another one like him and I thank him for all he did for my daughter. I will never forget him.

It is not surprising to read of David's accomplishments - both as a physician and as an interesting individual because he was a very special person while still at Malta Elementary and at M & M High School. As I entered a very new environment at age 10, David was one of my new classmates who accepted me and treated me well. My heart goes out to his family and my prayers will be for your strength to accept God's will for him and to carry on his legacy. Janice (Wilson) McConkey

Bunnie,
I am so sorry to learn that David passed away. You and he are very special people and I will never forget you, our time together and your generosity. Flying together to Nantucket was the best of times with David in the co-pilot position.
Sharing patients with him was always a joy.
