I will always remember Dr. Shinn with fondness and gratitude. When I was a student at UNCW it was Dr. Shinn who showed me how to free my mind and think for myself, and to think and explore beyond the familiar. What a giving, caring man he was, who expected the best from his students, and helped us to recognize our capabilities. I wish every student could have a professor exactly like Dr. Shinn at least in their college years. What a difference it made. Thank you Dr. Shinn for helping me and countless others become so much more than we dared believe we could. Thank you for believing in us.

I wanted to add my name to the long list of appreciative young'uns on whose lives Dr. Shinn had a positive influence. I was introduced to him in my senior year of high school, and throughout my time at UNC in the late 90's, when he happened to be in Chapel Hill he would treat a group of us to dinner and conversation at the Rathskeller. He always made us feel intelligent beyond our young years.
I am so sorry to hear of his passing and send my condolences.

Adored by all the girl campers at Camp Don Lee. Taught us the buddy system. The world is a poorer place without Gerald, but Heaven has been enriched.

One of my most inspirational professors was Dr. Gerry Shinn. I was lucky enough to enroll in his logic class where I experienced his enthralling educational methods.
I visited Dr. Shinn several times in Albemarle at the house his grandfather built. It was there that he ‘instructed' me to write a one page paper on the motto of UNCW: ‘Discere Aude' in 2003. You can take the teacher out of the classroom, but you can't… Love that man. God rest his soul.

Dr. Shinn taught me how to enjoy learning forty years ago. For that I will always be grateful. He truly had a great spirit. Thank you Dr. Shinn. R.I.P.

Dear Ruth and family:
Your father stood for all things being good. I was so fortunate to have learned from him and interacted with him as a faculty. The world is a better place for his having been here.

Ruth, we are deeply saddened by the news of your Dad's death. What a wonderful man he was, for us a true friend and colleague. He enriched the lives of so many students and was a major contributor to the development of UNCW. Odile and Jim McGowan

Ruth,
I am sorry to learn of the loss of your dad. While many lost a teacher, mentor, and friend, you lost your dad. I know that pain and you will be in my prayers!

When Dr. Shinn joined my father, B. Frank Hall, in the Philosophy and Religion Department, they became fast friends. My father often spoke of how grateful he was to know such a wonderful man who touched everyone who met him with a joy of life. Here's to him and all who loved him!

"O Captain my Captain". I will miss you so much. I will always cherish the times we spent at the "Hong Kong" playing chess and having more meaningful conversations than in any classroom or "God box". I will forever be one of your younguns. I love you. Rest in Peace my dear friend!

Dr Shinn had a profound effect on me. He helped me get into UNCW when I thought it impossible, taught me so much as a teacher and married my first wife and I. He was an amazing man and I am better for knowing him.

Gerry Shinn was a colleague and friend of mine for many years at UNCW. I will never forget the trip that he and I made way back in 1972 to a medieval conference in Michigan. I learned much about this wonderful man on that trip and from other encounters and conversation in the years that followed. I cannot find the words to express how much he will be missed. He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr Shinn's spirit must have been passing over the other day. I was telling my sister-in-law, about the old testament class I took under Dr Shinn at UNCW. I had a 2 hour wait between classes. I really enjoyed his class that much. Dr Shinn may you rest in peace. I will never forget you.

Dr. Shinn was the best college professor and teacher I ever had. He taught me to find answers for myself, no matter the subject, despite the fact his "business of not telling" drove me crazy. I and my family consider our lives to have been blessed by knowing him.

Dr. Shinn was one of the most interesting professors at UNCW. He really cared about the people in his classes and his classes were never boring. He will be greatly missed by so many folks. R-I-P

Heartfelt condolences are extended to the Shinn family from Gerry's many colleagues and friends in the UNCW Association of Retired Faculty. We will remember Gerry for his innovative educational methods, his love for learning, his initiatives that extended the university beyond the campus and the state, and most significantly, his inspiration to countless numbers of students. He will be missed.

Our deepest condolences to the Shinn family in this time of loss. Dr. Shinn single-handedly changed the way many young, unsuspecting Seahawks viewed the world around them. I was fortunate enough to be one of them. If you had him, you likely loved him but certainly never forgot him. What an awesome educator, humanitarian and friend. His departure leaves a space in our universe no other could ever fill.
Dr. Shinn, I'm sure you will shake up the gates of Heaven upon your arrival.
There will never be another just like you. I can say without hesitation you are one of a kind and my life is enriched from having crossed your path. Some go to college for a degree. Those who were lucky enough to have you received an education. Rest easy dear friend.
