Johnny Cook Obituary

DR. JOHNNY LEE COOK Dr. Johnny Lee Cook, age 63, of Wilmington, NC left his earthly home on June 19, 2013 to enter his heavenly home with our Lord. Dr. Cook was in full-time ministry for 39 years serving as pastor at 7 churches. He started The North Carolina College of Theology in 1997 with 9 students and today the college has over 1400 students. He was also a gifted singer and evangelist. His accomplishments are indicative of what a wonderful man he truly was. He won the ICCA Awards: comedian of the year three consecutive years, music evangelist of the year and in 2012 The Living Legend Award. He had three #1 songs on the country Christian charts. He helped establish nine churches and authored more than 20 books. His biggest accomplishment was being a kind, loving person that never met a stranger. Knowing Dr. Cook made you a better person. He was born in Asheville, NC, to Alvin and Maxine Cook. They later moved to Landis, NC, which he called home. He had resided in Wilmington, NC for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steve Cook. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 38 years, Judy Nash Cook; three sons, Rev. Jonathan Cook and wife Tiffany; Rev. Daniel Cook and wife Anne; and Rev. Timothy Cook. Four beautiful granddaughters, Savannah Cook (9), Marlee Cook (7), Bella Cook (6), and Piper Cook (4), also a grandchild due in October. Two sisters, Susan Corriher (Danny) and Karen Lee; and one brother, Randy Cook. The Cook family will always be indebted to our visionary, encourager and our leader for making us what we are today. He was the best husband, father, grandfather and friend....He will be missed. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at the Schwartz Center on the campus of CFCC, 601 N. Front St. in Wilmington with Pastor Clint Brown, Rev. Timothy Cook, Rev. Daniel Cook and Rev. Jon Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made in Dr. Cook's memory to the North Carolina College of Theology, P.O. Box 865, Carolina Beach, NC 28428. Dr Cook actually helped me change my life by offering a way to express my spiritual understanding through his delivery of sermons stat were biblically based and thought provoking.

I was saddened by his departure but not alone in the thinking behind his sermons. With the local guidance of Bishop Lee Moore, I received the best Christian education a person could easily incorporate into righteous thinking.

I only learned of Dr. J.L. Cook passing this morning. I was stunned, he and I have enjoyed many conversations over the 5 years we have known each other. I was impressed and moved by his genuine concern for myself and others, he always demonstrated a keen desire to help me with what ever was asked of him. I considered him a real friend and Brother in Christ, and a tireless co-labor in the harvest field of the Lord. I will surely miss Dr. Johnny Lee Cook and look forward to seeing him again in heaven one day.

I have never known a man more kind and gentle than Dr. J. L. Cook. He loved everybody regardless of race, color or creed. If you were a human being, he loved you. I am so thankful our lives crossed. He was such an inspiration to me. Every time I went to the Graduation, he was so happy to see me. He always had time for me. He even came to Albany, GA at his expense to help me promote our School. We went on TV, and he spoke on behalf of the School. He made me feel so proud. I loved him then and will always love Dr. J. L. Cook. He was a Giant among giants. Sleep on. Take your rest. We love you, but God loved you best.

Judy,
As I sit here reading all the wonderful things people had to say about Brother Johnny I am smiling because going through my mind is his "Cook-ology". In some of mine and Tommy's darkest days the phone would ring and it would be Johnny and boy could he bring you out of that ditch fast! When I look back over the years we have known him - he was such a blessing to our family. You and the boys shared him with so many people and I thank you for sharing him with the Register family. He will be greatly missed but the memories will go on until we see him in heaven. God Bless you and give you the strength to carry on his vision! Tommy and Sondra

Dearest Judy and Family,
My mom, sister and I went to the Cracker Barrel a few weeks ago and I almost got knocked down by Dr Cook (he forgot to look down). I said "Johnny, are you going to walk all over me and, like always, he got a BIG laugh and I got a BIG hug.
The Whittington family has known Judy and Johnny and the guys for more than 25 years. Some of my brothers have had revivals with him and I have sang for him many times. Our family is still in shock about his going but, thank God, he is in a better place,
Judy, I know what you will be going thru since I went thru the same thing in 1991 and I still miss Avery.
If you need to talk, just give me a call since both of these guys were wonderful husbands. I love you from my heart and I really love your sons. Give the family my love and I will be saying prayers for the entire family.

Lots of love

Dear Mrs. Judy & Family;

I wanted to send my condolences on the passing of Bro. Johnny. I remember so many wonderful sermons at Haynesville Baptist Church when I visited there with my Grandma & Papa Plemmons. I will always remember the sweet sweet words & memories that Bro. Johnny preached at Papa's funeral in 1985 and we were so blessed & thankful that he made the trip as it meant so much to Grandma & our family. Grandma always said "I love that Johnny Cook" and he loves my chocolate cake !!! I know that he has found my sweet Grandma & Papa already in their Heavenly home and gave them a big hug. I will always remember his wonderful smile & the hugs I always received each time I saw him. He will be sadly missed but gosh what an awesome angel God has received. I pray for you, your sons & their families to be surrounded with friends, Family & most of all God's love & blessings in the time ahead. It will be a short time until we all get to travel to our wonderful Heavenly Home & spend Eternity with our loved ones. Love & Prayers to you all.

Dr.Cook made a profound impact on my life. He was indeed a wonderful man of GOD. I cherish many memories of him preaching, singing, and, teaching. He was also a generously, kind, exhorter. He loved making people laugh. His humor and wit, were gifts from GOD, that he shared with all of whomever, were in his presence. He literally wanted to give me the clothes off his back, for the homeless men in need. GOD is with you all; The Cook Family. I know that your loss is Heaven's gain. He is entertaining, The Master. Dear Judy, Jonathan, Daniel, and Timothy:
Brother Johnny was (at the very least) a unique person. One never could forget him. For whatever reason, he was taken with my work with the Back-to-Bethel Campmeeting, and seemed determined that he and I would work together. I enjoyed my time at South Biscayne with him and Brother Mike Fautt. I am sorry that it was so short at time. He was taken far too early. But, the great promise is that we shall sing again, and will not have to separate! Take hope, family!

Johnny Cook....what a great man of God. Who was so wise and full of wisdom. He always had a way of making room for his jokes before he ministered and sometimes in between. I loved to hear him sing as well as preach and tell his jokes. He has immensely touched my life over the years. From time to time we'd talk as I was recovering from a severe accident that should have taken my life but he would call always right on time with a word of encouragement and even yep..you got it..one of his jokes. Always made me feel better and stronger to get well. I can see you now Johnny...you're having the time of your life and you finished the race and you ran it well. Until We Meet Again My Friend...I love you!

Words always seem so shallow, but in my brief working relationship with Bro. Johnny, I grew to admire him a great deal. He had a burning desire to do everything within his power to insure that our Lord was represented in every area possible. Although absent from his body and our presence, he is now with our Lord…and filling the Heavens with more happiness!

His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' (Matthew 25:21)

Many prayers are with Johnny's family and friends. I am blessed by having met and work with him.

I feel great sorrow for all of you...I love you dearly. I rejoice for my friend, who is now in the presence of Christ. I love your husband and father more than you will ever know and am so thankful that God used him so greatly in my life. Preaching to "me" on Feb. 13, 1983(day I trusted Christ), encouraging me to pursue God by going to Bible College and surrendering to God's call, following God's call to have me as his youth pastor in 1989, mentoring me, giving me so much wisdom and advice, and loving me (I really felt like a fourth son to him). Wish I could be there to honor Bro. Johnny. Please know that I will be praying for you and if I can do anything for you, please do not hesitate to call on me.
