Kenneth Cowin Obituary

Kenneth Douglas Cowin, 85, of Hampstead, NC, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at his residence.
He was born in Sale, England, on September 15, 1921, the son of the late Herbert and Ethel Christian Cowin. He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Vanessa and Rebecca Robertson.
He was a communications officer in the British Merchant Navy and Royal Navy during World War II, serving on several ships. He came to the United States in 1948, and married Mary Sherry Cowin and had six children. He was an engineer by trade; his sales territory was the world, selling harbor navigational systems, which included the Panama and Suez Canals. He started Seabait Ltd. in England with his son, Peter Cowin. That company exists today and has spun off a subsidiary in Maine. He was an amateur race car driver and his interest included Scuba diving, and air ships, until his death.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Cowin of Hampstead, NC; three sons, Robert Cowin of New York City, NY, Peter Cowin and wife, Anne, of Hampden, ME, and Kenneth Cowin of Memphis, TN; three daughters, Carolyn Turkelson and husband, Michael, of Williamsburg, MI, Marie Robertson and husband, Larry, of Andover, MA, and Pamela Fritz and husband, Brian, of Hampstead, NC; six grandchildren, Clayton Cowin and Christina Fritz, both of Hampstead, NC, Christopher, Matthew, Thomas and James Cowin, all of ME.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel.
Mr. Cowin will be buried in the St. Andreas Church Family plot in St. Andreas, Isle of Man, England.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 725 Wellington Ave., Wilmington, NC 28401.
