Lynn Pollock Obituary

LYNN WARD POLLOCK Lynn Ward Pollock died peacefully at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, September 18th, 2019, miraculously four and a half years after her diagnosis of stage IV lung cancer. She was born in Wilmington, educated in the New Hanover Public School System and attended UNC-Greensboro and UNC-Chapel Hill where she graduated with a degree in Sociology. She was married in 1971 to her husband of 48 years, Hoke D. Pollock, M.D. They raised three wonderful children, Hoke W. Pollock, M.D.; Fairley Pollock Patton, Ed.D.; McLean Pollock Kram, Ph.D. During these years of raising children she worked part—time while earning her Master's Degree in School Counseling at North Carolina Central University, and was subsequently a school counselor in New Hanover County Schools for 30 years. In remembering a time when she felt out of place, she recalled her first class at the campus of NC Central University: "I was the only white person in the class, but I felt immediate acceptance. What a wonderful experience." Her life was lived in service to what she knew to be the truth, that every human being is entitled to our respect and our love. Her deepest wish was that all of us learn how to love each other and how to accept each others love. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Hoke Dickinson Pollock; her children, Hoke Ward Pollock and his wife Cristi Gonzalez Pollock, Fairley Pollock Patton and her husband James Solomon Patton II, and McLean Pollock Kram and her husband Justin Keim Kram; her mother Adelaide Scales Ward; her brother Edward Lee Ward, Jr.; and her devoted sister, Kitty Ward Davis. Lynn also has seven grandchildren, whom she adored: Hoke S., Cole, Miles, Max, and Ema Pollock and William and Ely Kram. A private scattering of her ashes will be done at a time not yet determined. In lieu of flowers, Lynn's favorite charities were the Fully Belly Project, the Alzheimer's Foundation, and the United Negro College Fund, or a charity of your choice. Lynn was my coworker and mentor at Hoggard and the first one I ran to with any and all situations. She was a steady calm and wise soul, always offering a smile and reassurance that was greatly appreciated. She made me feel knowledgeable and funny, even though Im often not either of those things. She was always light-hearted yet serious and could balance the two with grace. I was devastated to hear about her cancer diagnosis and am so glad I got to spend time with her again two years ago. Even with her obvious discomfort, she was as gracious and lovely as ever. Im so sorry for your loss and am heartbroken for your family!!! Lynn will forever be in my heart and made a huge impact in my life Thank you for sharing her with so many.

Lynn was the best counselor I ever worked with. She had amazing intuition and compassion. She was one of the kindest and genuine people I have ever known. I loved working with her at Trask and later at New Hanover. Hoke - my heart breaks for you and your family in this difficult time. You all will be in my prayers, love to all.

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Lynn. What a wonderful, kind, joyful woman. I had the great pleasure to teach both Fairley and McLean some 30 years ago at CFA. Lynn and Hoke took such positive interest in their education, both academically and socially. Such a sweet, gentle woman. She is now dancing with the angels.

Our Lynn is now at peace and has carried her beautiful smile and infectious laugh to heaven. She was a true friend to everyone she met and always has kind, peaceful words to everyone. I will miss sending her monthly cards to let her know how dear she was to me. She was such an inspiration to so many and I just hope I can lead my life, potential illness, and death with as much dignity as she did. She raised beautiful, successful children and they will carry on her legacy to others. I will miss you, my dear friend.

Lynn was a high school friend with whom I lost touch decades ago, however not a word in her obituary surprises me. That exceptional teenage girl went on to lead a full and accomplished life, characterized by devotion to her family and her love and compassion for others. What a memorable example Lynn set for us all, and what a fine legacy she leaves. My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Ward, and to Dr. Pollock and her family -

I was one of the fortunate ones who met Lynn while teaching Jazzercise. She was a true inspiration to us all, especially after she fell ill. She was such a supporter of ours, even though she couldn't attend classes as much as she wanted to. The one thing I remember the most about Lynn was her infectious smile. I'd be at the front of the class teaching, and she was always stood to my Jazzercise "right" behind 3 students. As we say so often, everyone had there "spots", and you could count on Lynn being in hers when she could get there. Even if I was teaching a routine that would knock the breath out of you or make your legs feel as if they were on fire and I could always count on Lynn to be smiling back at me, no matter what. She will truly be missed by the Jazzercise family. My deepest sympathy goes out to all of your family and friends.

I knew Lynn from Jazzercise. She was a beloved customer and friend before and after her illness. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her as she tried to attend as many classes as she could. I will miss her lovely smile and her great kindness to everyone.
