I was sad to read of Mary's passing in the Carolina Alumni Review and IMMEDIATELY pictured her beautiful self and heard her voice and laugh! I SO remember her, along with Libby and Malia at UNC. I was moved to tears reading these memories posted, and can see she only grew her circle of friends and people she touched. I am so glad her legacy lives on in Sarah and the grands, and in all of our memories. "We grieve but not as those who have no hope..."--I will see you in Heaven, Mary Dula!!

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Mary's death. She was the sweetest , kindest, classiest ladies I have met. I met her by chance at the Bluewater last summer during one of those great Sunday summer happy hours. We went on a date 2 weeks later and had a wonderful evening. If it wasn't for the fact that I lived in Raleigh and she in Wilmington, I'm sure we would have seen more of each other.I regret not contacting her again after last July. Your family has truly lost an angel.
Sincerely, Jeffrey Leinwand-Raleigh

Death was not God's original purpose for us. It is something for which we can never be completely prepared. The Bible says: "Time indefinite God has put in our hearts" (Ecclesiastes 3:11) He created us with the desire to live forever. And he opened the way for that desire to be fulfilled at John 3:16.

Mary was such a thoughtful, gentle person. I always enjoyed being around her. She was so kind to me when my Grandmother passed away in September, sending me a beautiful hand-made card with dried pansies from her Charlotte home. I will miss her very much. Jennifer Spradley

Sarah and family:
Our love to you. Mary served as a Stephen Minister at Myers Park Methodist--and she was devoted to it. She once wrote in a Lenten Devotion Book: "As you go through this Lenten season, remember those who may be alone, so that you may be the face of Jesus to someone who may need your presence," . . . as Mary was to so many here. She said: "I am not alone, nor will I ever be, because the father is with me." God bless.

Dear Mary,
My life is forever changed knowing you. What a godly, selfless woman of grace, Your light shines on.
From the first time I met you, while working at BoA, we instantly bonded sharing many common connections, MPUMC, YMCA, love of family, and mutual friendships.
You found good in all situations, never complaining.
Though selfishly I will miss you and your precious Facebook posts of family, your spirit lives among us.
Thank you for all you shared in life from subtle acts of kindness, love for God, family, and fellow man- a true testament for others!

Sarah,
I'm stunned, and deeply saddened when I found out about Mary's passing. Mary and I became friends, and Stephen Ministers at church, besides going to the Charlotte YMCA. We went out a few times, even to some Carolina functions, and had fun. She was such a sweet girl, and we talked often about her moving to be close to you, and the grandkids. She was so happy when she made the move. Mary was one in a million, and loved very much by all. She was a good Christian, and hard worker. I wish we all had some of her qualities. Sarah, I know she adored you, and right now would say hang in there!
Love you Mary!! I know you're smiling with God! You'll be missed by many.

My heart ached upon hearing of Mary's passing. She was a friendly face in a crowd of strangers when I started attending group classes at the YMCA. She gave more than just a courteous Hello. Mary had conversations with us. She asked about families, work and we exchanged stories about our Journey to fitness. We'd tease each other about being able to hang in there with the young folks. When we were exhausted Mary would make a comment that cause everyone nearby to laugh. I will miss her smile and encouragement. I pray that God's Peace, Love, and Strength bring Comfort to all that Loved Mary.

What fun I had getting to know Mary while we were co-assistants to Erskine Bowles - she in NC and I in NY. Through emails and phone calls we became fast friends and finally met in DC with Sarah and my husband. It felt like we were friends forever because that's how she made everyone feel. Mary was loved and will be missed by so many people. My heart goes out to you, Sarah, and your family. Mary loved you and your children and I know she'll always be watching over you and the new one on the way.

Sarah,
I was so shocked and saddened to hear about your mom. I last spoke with her right before she left Charlotte.
Mary and I were sorority sisters at Carolina. I remember we had the same model car - Pontiac Grand Prix! We reconnected just a few years ago at the Harris Y exercise classes. I would have known her anywhere - she looked exactly the same. I always looked forward to seeing her. She was always smiling and never complaining about anything. When she decided to move to Wilmington, I was sad but she was so happy to be closer to you and your family. She spoke of you often and was so proud of you. I remember her talking about your wedding and how much fun she had. Please know that I am keeping your family close in thought and prayer.

Dear Sarah, your mom was my neighbor and friend in Charlotte. We shared social times, the pool, and church together. She was the cutest, and one of the most loving lady I have ever known. She shared your college days, your marriage, and the birth of her first grandson with me. I have never seen her happier than the day she told me she sold her house, found a new job, a new home, and was moving to Wilmington to be with her babies. She loved all of you so much! I can't begin to understand the lost that you feel over the loss of your beautiful mother, but I do know that she lives in Heaven and will be with you always! Much Love to you and your family.

The first time I met Mary it was the interview! She had applied for a job at First Citizens, and we hired her. She and I made an instant connection. It was like we were living parallel lives. We would run into each other's office with the latest video of our grandchildren and would gush over our families, and how much we loved them. It got to the point where we would show up to work with the same colors on! We would laugh at funny videos on YouTube until tears were running down our cheeks. And her laugh....so infectious....it made you laugh even harder. She was a great gift giver. I have lovely birthday, and Christmas gifts from her. It's as if we had known each other our entire lives. Next to The Lord, she loved nothing more than her family. I'm so grateful God allowed our paths to cross, because we connected on so many levels. She was such a gift, and I look forward to the day I will see her again ! Being at work will never be the same without her. I loved Mary Dula!

I just read through the lovely guest book comments and I am amazed at how close those comments mirror what I would have said about her 45 years ago! She was my best friend in 5th grade...we were patrol girls together! She may not have considered me as her "best" friend (because she had so many) but I truly loved her. I have lost touch with her over the years but I have never forgotten what she meant to me. About ten years ago she mailed back to me letters I had written to her while I was living in Sweden. She kept those letters and then had the warmth and thoughtfulness to give them back to me...Sarah, you are blessed to have had such a loving mom, I am sorry for your loss but I know that she is a part of you and lives on through you and your children.

Dear Sarah, I worked with your Mom at Bank of America. She was my cube mate for 1+ years during the time she supported Bob Qutub. I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was beautiful, smart, and very funny. I would giggle at her stories about the cat, and life in general. She would talk about you and how excited she was about having her first grandchild. Wow, I am tearing up as I look at her picture. I can't believe she's gone.
The last time I saw your Mom was at her going away party (for moving to Wilmington) at Bricktops in Charlotte. I happened to run in to her; she and a crowd of friends had taken over the bar area and were having so much fun. That's how I will remember her...so happy, with a huge smile on her face. All my best, Carrie (Kane) Van Epps.
