Murray Pool Obituary

MURRAY HAYNES POOL Murray Haynes Pool And what a delightful and witty soul he was! Murray Haynes Pool, age 98, formerly of Wrightsville Beach, passed away on January 12, 2015. He was born on August 15, 1916 in Raleigh to the late Rufus A. Pool and Margery Haynes Pool. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Zipporah Rice Pool. He is survived by his step-daughter Martha Christian of Altadena, California, step-son David Christian of Memphis, Tennessee, nephew Rufus A. Jack Pool of Wilmington and nephew Murray P. Pool, Sr. and wife, Angie, of Wrightsville Beach. Nicknamed "Mouse" by his many friends, Murray possessed the rare ability to bring a smile to the face of everyone he knew or met, regardless of their position in life. A well-read individual he was. Rarely was he engaged in a conversation that he did not provide a meaningful contribution, regardless of the subject matter. Murray was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a World War II veteran. After many years with the North Carolina Rating Bureau, he retired early and moved from Raleigh to Wrightsville Beach, where he had spent many years during his youth. Murray's hobbies were fishing-he caught many-and art. His cartoons were published often in various publications. His combination of a sharp wit and an entertaining sense of humor were a perfect match for a cartoonist. But most of all, Murray was a good, loving soul, who brought joy to many. His written stories, several of which were published, magnified his wit and sense of humor. All of us would be so fortunate to have such gifts. He will be missed and his memory will last a very long time. A private service will be held at a later date.

We met Murray 6 years ago while visiting Woods at Holly Tree, his retirement home. We regularly visited while our father lived there but after he moved on we made it a point to visit Murray when we were in town. What a gentleman and a scholar. He exemplified all the best in humanity; never uttered an ill word or complaint and always interested in our lives rather than boasting about his contributions to the world. We will definitely remember and miss our friend Murray.

So gentle. So kind. A consummate gentleman.

Such a zest for life, never mattered if it was a new shell, a new pool cue or a new pup, his enthusiasm mirrored mine and validated my excitement. Quick with the wit and always ready to share his knowledge, his hands or his heart. So unassuming. So intelligent.

It was my privilege to know him and call him my friend. I will miss my fishing buddy.

Wrightsville Beach not only lost a Historian, but an honest to God treasure.

Martha, Jack, Angie and Murray:
You have lost a wonderful man who was my oldest friend and I join you in remembering his life that inspired everyone he touched. When I last visited him before Christmas, he was still the same person I met in 1986; always entertaining and full of life. I know we will remember him for the remainder of our life and appreciate having known him.
Bless Him
