Owen Carlin Obituary

Owen Carlin

Wilmington - Owen Bryant Carlin passed on from this earth with peace and serenity at age 89, on March 29, 2021, after a long journey with chronic illnesses. Owen followed in death his wife Rose by 3 weeks to the day and hour, a testament to the love they had for each other, which was a blessing to them as to their children and all who knew them. In his final years Owen and his wife both required personal assistance and Owen made it possible for his children to choose to assist them in their own homes. We are both grateful for that opportunity and we also deeply appreciate the Caregivers who accompanied us on this journey for their dedication and support.

Owen was born January 27, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York. His family moved to Rutherford, NJ where Owen was raised. His family's experience of the country's Great Depression imparted values that would stay with him the rest of his life. Owen attended Drexel University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering through the work study program. Owen satisfied his draft requirement by volunteering to serve in the Army on graduation, and was stationed in Panama as a specialized educator.

After his marriage to long time sweetheart Rose Marie Nostas in 1968 he dedicated himself to Rose and the raising of their two children who came shortly after, Thomas Owen, and Jeanette Elizabeth Rose. Owen and Rose continued to give as their two grandkids came along, Isabel Susannah and Luke Thomas and didn't hesitate to follow their family move to Wilmington, NC in 2006. They left dear friends and a dream home in New Jersey but made new friends easily and found a life that suited them in their new home state.

Owen found irresistible many interests and pastimes. Family and friends were enriched over the years with adventures through among other things: gastronomy, hiking, especially for mushroom collection, apple picking and cidering, gardening and rock tumbling, bee culture and birding, wood BBQ, tennis, coin collecting, fruit and Christmas tree orcharding, antique clock collecting, preserving local history of Ralston, NJ, long term investing, and travels and exploration of special places on vacations.

Owen will be remembered for living his life with gusto and curiosity, sharing his passions with others, for his humor which was often self-deprecating as he didn't want to take himself too seriously, for being authentic, original, gregarious and social, for being unworried about appearances, for being a planner, thinker and researcher, for his interest in family heritage and family cohesion, for "talk is cheap, actions have meaning," for his stoicism in the face of challenges, and for his charity to others and causes. Owen is also remembered for his honesty, integrity and strong self-sufficiency.

Owen is survived by his son Tom and his wife Susannah of Wilmington, their children Isabel and Luke, daughter Jeanette and her partner Roger Cook also of Wilmington. Owen is also survived by loving siblings Gladys and Peter and family of Sarasota, Florida.

At the end of his life Owen found a spiritual home at the Episcopal Church in his final neighborhood, St. John's Episcopal Church. The family thanks the St. John's pastor and community for their kindness to and acceptance of Owen and his family. The family also extends gratitude to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare for attending to the needs of Owen and Rose in their final most difficult months.

Due to Covid limitations a private memorial service will be held on Friday April 3, 2021, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28401. Owen would have shared the request made by his wife Rose, "It is my wish that…my resting place will be in the hearts and souls of those who loved me and the caring and goodness they pass on to others along the way of life. Instead of flowers, a coffin, a gravesite, give a memorial in my memory or plant some trees somewhere." The family invites donations to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, the American Kidney Fund or donations of trees through Arbor Day Foundation.

Fond memories of this great man wash over me in a sweet wave. So rarely do the elements mix together to produce as gentle and genuine a soul as Owen Carlin. He spread his warmth and kindness to all whose lives he touched. Owen was a kindred spirit of nature and delighted others with his knowledge, whether it be describing a plant in his garden or identifying which bird was perched on a branch just outside the window. May he rest easy with his beloved sweetheart. Rose's desire to have her true resting place be in the hearts of their loved ones readily summarizes their legacy: one of goodwill, compassion, and love. Their kindly light lives on!

I am remembering Owen and his delightful family in their large home on Rutherford's Ridge Road --- his Mother canning large baskets of overripe tomatoes to the delight of everyone!. Or visiting his Grandmother high on a hill at Tyler Pond outside of Torrington/Goshen, Connecticut. My grandparents had a summer home there also, but sadly Owen and I did not realize this until after our graduation. We were never very close in high school, but were friends for a time afterwards until other interests drew us apart. I am greatly saddened at his passing. `

The Rutherford High School class of "49 may have been small in number and large in being close to one another. We will always remember Owen as being very cheerful, caring and helpful. In later years at one of our reunions at his home, we discovered what a great horticulturist he was, growing an orchard of apple trees. May he rest in peace. Our condolences to his family.

Owen was a neighbor, classmate and dear friend from Rutherford, NJ. We met in the 4th grade and graduated together from Rutherford High School in June 1949. I and all our classmates where fortunate to have Owen in our lives, as children and then for many years thereafter. He was a joy to visit with he and Rose at his "Apple Farm" in New Jersey and to be with at the many class Reunions held by the RHS Class of 1949. He shall remain in my memory during my remaining years. Rest in peace my friend...

My Uncle Owen - He was a man from another time. Cooking over the fire, tending to his orchard, smoking his pipe and proudly presiding over his family. So many fond memories.... He leaves a legacy behind. A some big shoes to fill.

Tom, Susannah and Jen, it is not easy to lose two precious gems at the same time, but now they are shining in God’s Kingdom. Their legacy and good memories of them remain with us. Owen’s harmonica joins a chorus of angels and Rose’s cooking will adorn the heavenly banquet.

Owen and Rose Carlin were exemplary citizens, parents, and the type of people you would be proud to know. They were a wonderful couple that passed the torch of kindness and righteousness on to their two wonderful children. They will always be remembered by their friends and relatives to be The Real McCoy, may they rest in peace.

Owen left me with wonderful memories of his love for and devotion to family and friends, great interest in learning, seeing new places and trying new things. I'll always remember hiking in Indiana - Rose and I singing and Owen playing the harmonica. When asked if he and Rose wanted to go on a trip to Turkey, there was no hesitation...and we had a marvelous time! And who else would wait til midnight of Christmas eve to buy a Christmas tree to save a few bucks! He was his own fun loving and caring person and I miss him and Rose so much.
