Rip,

Our 50th Hill School Class Reunion is this coming June and our Class Headquarters will be The New Davy Dorm. The dorm in your honor is our Class of 1975 gift. Rip was a terrific guy loved by everyone who knew him. I still love his family and wish we could bring him back. I can't believe he's been gone so long. Lots of the time I spent with he and his wife Margo are special memories for me, particularly a few ski trips. Each one was enhanced by his great sense of humor and terrific smile. I think of those times often and hope they never go away.

Hard to believe it has been so long since Rip died. He was one of a kind: decent to all -- repeat: all; an optimist; a fair but fierce competitor; and an All-America in all respects: as athlete and as a good man.

Margo and the boys: Rip and I were childhood friends who went to elementary school together. We used to sneak onto Cobbs Creek Golf Course to play some of our earliest competitive rounds of golf at age 9. Having not seen each other in recent years, we had communicated and promised each other some renewed rounds. He was a wonderful man who touched and inspired many of us throughout his life with his generosity and warm spirit.

One evening this last week I happened to be in a "sentimental", reminising mood and set off on "googling" a number of people that were very special to me as I was growing up. The news of Rip's passing was truly heart breaking and I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Although I only briefly knew and met Rip a few times when I attended Linden Hall, a girls boarding school in PA (graduated in 1975), I can attest as do all the other lovely entries in his guest book, that Rip was a very kind, dear person and touched many lives.

I feel it important, especially to his family, to share a quote or actually a poem that Rip wrote in a letter to me that I saved from January 30, 1975. I believe that it expresses, even at the young age of 18, his strength of character. I read verbatim...

"P.S." Whenever I wonder about my purpose on this Earth and why it's worth living I think of this poem by Emily Dickinson entitled, "Not in Vain":

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

God Bless you Rip.

Fondly,

Margo-

Yesterday was the first I heard of Rip's passing and my heart goes out to you and the family. While playing at Westchester in the member member tournament, which Rip and I played in a number of times, I happended to mention Rip's name to John Kennedy who passed along the information.

Fortunately I had the chance to play a bunch of rounds with Rip and it was always such a great experience due to Rip's competitiveness on the course but mostly because of his ability to make everyone around him so comfortable.

From all of the guest book entries, its easy to see how Rip was able to touch so many people. I feel fortunate to have known him and Rip will be missed by many at WCC.

My prayers are with you.

Graduated with Rip from The Hill School in '75. He was always one of the most special people I ever met. In a social system divided up between the Jocks, Geeks and Freaks (myself included), Rip was always a friend to all. I just wanted to express my sorrow to the family. Praying for you.

I lived my UNC freshman year in Carr dormitory down the hall from Rip. I remember Rip being such a special person with a warmth that endeared him to everyone. After not seeing him since college, I ran into him at an alumni function in New York City in 2002. It felt so good reconnecting with Rip after all those years. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

Little be known, but you were also a very good baseball player. I had the pleasure of being on the several summer baseball teams with you, Ardwood Cadets, Doc Moscow was our coach: 1970 & 1971. Glad you decided to play lacrosse, because you had trouble hitting the curve ball---Take Care

We've only just heard the tragic news about Rip's passing and wanted to send along our thoughts and condolences. Rip always had a smile on his face. We used to talk on the Rowayton train platform and hope the train wouldnt be late in the 20 degree weather. Craig enjoyed his paddle tennis games with him.
Lots of strength to you Margo.

I could fill pages about Rip Davy....the email on January 17 was one of the most shocking moments in my life, Rip meant so much to so many people, I am lucky to have been one.

He was and will continue to be one of the men that helped shape me (and many others) as a man, father, husband, and citizen. As a man you could not go wrong modeling by the example of Rip Davy, he was incredible.

Margo, I will think of you, Will and Brooks often and will take solace knowing his strong spirit will continue on in those beautiful boys.

I thank God for having so much time with Rip, but will miss him deeply. I send my sympathy to the entire Davy family.

Whenever there is an important decision in my life, I will look to the sky and ask Ripper for his advice, and picture that big, infectious smile with his kind guiding words....

To Rip Davy's Family,

I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Rip’s passing. I can take some solace in seeing the huge outpouring of sympathy, especially from fellow Hill classmates, since we are not the most communicative bunch. Rip in so many ways was the glue of the class; kind and courteous to all, whether they were an athlete like him or not. It is clear those same characteristics touched all who crossed his path at college and in his work. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of great sadness.

Dear Margo,

Bonnie and I just learned today about your family's loss. We are so saddened by this news and know our thoughts and prayers are with you and your beautiful boys.

Rip has always been a very special friend. When I first met Rip in 1984, I knew immediately that he would be a great friend for life. He was passionate, caring, fun and genuinely interested in the lives of others

We wish we were closer to provide support to your family. We will miss Ripper. Please call upon us if we can help in any way.

Our love

Craig and I wanted you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. I can only smile as I remember Rip. Rip was always fun to be around...a gentleman...generous...a real one of a kind. Margo I knew when I heard him describe you that you were "the one". I remember how proud he was as Will and Brooks were born and I looked forward to every unique Christmas card and update from the Davy family.
Although only time will provide the relief and comfort you long for, I pray that God will be with you in each step along the way.
God Bless.

To the Davy Family
It is with my sincere sympathy for your deep loss that I write this note to you. I met Rip in the 80's while working at Aetna. Though he was in FL and I was in CT, we became good friends. Rip was bright, honest, caring, funny and always a true gentleman. He made everyone he knew feel very special. I feel honored to have known him.

May your wonderful memories help you find peace.

Bill & Susan Clifford

January 26, 2008

To Margo and the Davy Family,

Please accept our sympathy for your exceptional loss. We were both lucky to have worked with Rip in New York. At Aetna for Susan (Haws) Clifford and at JPMorgan Chase for me.

I've always been impressed by the size of Rip's circle of friends -- it seemed he knew everyone or could instantly connect to a close friend of someone he was meeting for the first time. I was lucky to attend today's beautiful memorial service in CT and listen to his friends share small insights into what made Rip so special. Constant themes were Rip's fierce loyalty, genuine kindness and love of life.

Margo and Brooks,
I was so saddened to hear about your loss. Just know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Your Wrightsville Beach School family is there for you.

January 26, 2008

Like many offering their condolences, I knew Rip at The Hill School. The year I arrived, he was our class president and an established athlete, yet despite being a BMOC, he was the antithesis of the stereotype: friendly, kind and down-to-earth. Years later, I discovered he still embodied those qualities when our paths briefly crossed through work while he was at Aetna. Suffice it to say, I'm shocked and deeply saddened at his very premature passing. My heart truly goes out to his wife and sons.

Mark Baker

January 25, 2008

So here is how I will remember Rip - Sitting at a table at Smith & Wollenskys with a huge smile and his infectious laugh ringing out for all to hear - enjoying a steak, a good wine, and doing quite well wagering on a simple game of chance. He was just such a good guy.

I do want to say to Will and Brooks - it is pretty clear from the outpouring you are witnessing what a special man your dad is. I say is because realize that he is still with you and always will be. His spirit is far too strong to be denied, and he will be there every step of the way throughout your lives - all you have to do is look a little to see it.

To Rip's family,

I'm sorry for your loss. Rip's kindness and generous spirit touched everyone who knew him.

Rip was the senior executive on our insurance account, back in his Aetna days. I am stunned to learn of his untimely passing, and cannot fathom it. Rip was such a robust & vibrant person, but at least I am sure he got a lot of fun out of his time here on earth, and he left the world a better place than he found it. I will always remember him as a great guy, a pleasaure to know and be around, and for his outgoing personality. My sincere condolences to Rip's family. May your memories sustain you and give you comfort.

Dan Burch

January 24, 2008

To the Davy Family: I would like to express my feelings of sorrow to you upon hearing about RIP'S passing. I hope you find your lives moving in a positive direction, gaining strength from the memories of how much of a positive impact had on others. I was a teamate of his at UNC and will always remember his love of lacrosse and his infectious attitude.

Rud Turnbull

January 24, 2008

I knew Rip when I was faculty advisor to the UNC lacrosse team from 1969-1980. His friend and mine Tim Sheehan let me know about his death. He was a splendid athlete and, more importantly, a person who knew how to open his life to others and thereby bring his joyful personality and innate decency into their lives. He gave more than he asked for, and he exemplified the phrase Blue Chip Student Athlete. I had not forgotten him, nor will I.

Margo and Family
I've had the good fortune of knowing Rip for over 20 years. We worked at Aetna together. Everyone loved him, and you know that better than all. He lit up a room with his smile and laugh. The world is a better place because of him and we are all fortunate to have known such a wonderful person. He will be missed, but thoughts of the times with him aways end up with a smile or a chuckle. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

January 24, 2008

I was stunned today, 1/24/08, to learn of Rip's death. I knew Rip professionally when he was with the Aetna and serviced our group insurance account -- he was great to work with and was always trying to do what was right and in our company's best interests. I also respected his athletic abilities as an outstanding lacross player. There is no question that Rip was one of the "good guys" -- fun to be around, professional in every sense of the word, someone you wanted to be around. My heartfelt sympathies go to his wife and children and all other surviving family members. Strange isn't it that Rip also stands for "Rest in Peace". God bless you, Rip and may you always "Rest in Peace".

Margo--

just got an email from a mutual friend telling me of Rip's passing-- I just can't believe that Mr. "full of life" Davy is gone--what a shocker and tragedy of gargantuan proportion. Just awful news. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I was a contempory of Rip's in high school and at UNC. Haverford School grad that wrestled Rip in the finals of the 1975 PAPSIT Tournament. After a 5-1 defeat, I accepted my silver medal. We ended up at UNC together and shared time with Rip and his lacrosse buddies. Greatly saddened by the news. May God bless the family.

Tony Reid

January 24, 2008

Like everyone, I was shocked and just crushed to hear that Rip had died. I'm still in disbelief. Such a vital guy, such a warm guy. At Hill, Rip was the one who broke down boundaries, who had friends in every group. He was our class's star athlete, but though he was admired by everyone for his skill, it was his genuine kindness that stood out the most. I offer my deepest sympathy to his family.

Geoff Turner

January 24, 2008

I went to UNC with Rip from 1975 to 1978, and socialized with him some, shared rides back to Philly for holidays, and watched many of his lacrosse games.

I've often told people that the hardest that I was ever hit on a basketball court was by an All_American lacrosse player in Woollen Gym while at UNC. Ripper was extremely polite about helping me back up afterward.

A great guy. The world will miss him.

My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Richard OShaughnessy

January 24, 2008

I was so sorry to hear of Rip's passing. I have such vivid memories of him as captain of the Hill football team I coached. As a leader of this special group, he found out that we had our TV stolen, and he and a teamate got the others to chip in to buy a new one. It was typical of his warm personality. My deepest condolences to his family. Dick O'Shaughnessy

It is a great tribute to Rip that so many of these rememberances come from Hill, UNC and other friends who had not seen him in many years. I am a proud member of the'I've been hit by Rip Davy' club. He'd always pick you up off the grass, pat your back, say something positive, make you laugh, and get you back in the game; even if you were seeing stars. He was a great athlete, inspiring leader, repected businessman, wonderful & loving father, and devoted husband. He was EVERYONES 'best' friend. I am glad to have known him growing up and to have spent some time together in his final years with us. We'll carry on Rip, but man, we will miss you!

Rip epitomized the enthusiastic approach to life. I remember him at The Hill as rarely without a big grin and an eye out for the fun in something. When I saw this guy across a table at a party in Rowayton over 20 years later, it was unmistakably Rip. While our paths haven't crossed since my move from Connecticut to North Carolina in 2001, I will remember his grin always and wish peace to Margo and his family.

January 23, 2008

Dear Margo, Will and Brooks -
I am still stunned and extremely saddened by the news of Rip's tragic death. I worked with Rip in Aetna's NYC office for several years in the 1990's. Rip was consistently friendly and good-natured, the consummate salesman. It is hard for me to fathom that his vital presence is no longer. Although I do not believe we ever met, Margo, I easily recall Rip's fondness for you and his extreme joy and pride when your sons were born. My thoughts and condolences go out to the entire family. May you find comfort in the support of family and friends and in fond memories. Deepest Sympathy -

Norman Seabrooks

January 23, 2008

Rip Davy has been my friend for more than 20 years. He was best man at my wedding and other than my five year old son, the only person I allowed to call me Normie more than once. He was a very unique man who treated every meeting like a first date with someone really special. Ralph was supportive, attentive and caring. The true eloquence of Rip’s life was not how he lived, but that he lived. He had that rare ability to give every person, regardless of their station in life, the feeling that they mattered. Whether he was meeting with the CEO of a major cooperation or the clubhouse attendant at a golf club, he treated each meeting as if it did not come with an automatic expiration date. I will miss my friend very much and it’s saddens me that my children will never have the pleasure of knowing this great man.

I did not keep in contact with him after college but am sure if I had run into him he would have greeted me with a big smile. Margo,
Be comforted in the knowledge that Rip left such a substantive, life-affirming and lasting impression on every soul he touched.
I could not have had a more supportive and genuine friend with which to share the joys and tribulations that life brings, and loved him as a brother.
Rather than mourn his passing, I prefer to celebrate his life, and relish in sharing "Ripper stories" with all those friends who will appreciate them as much as I do.
May the Peace of the Lord be always with you, and with the boys.
Love and Bear Hugs

Rip was my roomate at the Hill School our 5th & 6th form years (junior & senior years). Being a only kid he was the brother I never had. Always upbeat & positive. Rip always wore a smile and had a keen wit. A true gentleman - I never heard him utter an unkind word. Ralph was the finest athlete I ever knew and was truly humble. A prince of a guy. For two years... from across the room I would hear, "Goodnight Stanley"...and I would respond, "Goodnight Ralph." His passing has left a hole in my heart.

Like all who respond from afar, I was terribly shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Rip's passing. Obviously Rip was still way too young, strong, and loving to be taken at this time in his life. I was a UNC (class of 77’) lacrosse teammate of Rip's and communicated with him periodically over the years through lacrosse events and the network. I last ran across him while on a concession stand line at the "Linc" in Philadelphia during the May 06' NCAA lacrosse finals. In that short moment we effortlessly chatted and caught up on stories and mutual acquaintances. The brief conversation brought me a pleasant sensation as I walked back to my seat. Rip was a fabulous athlete, big strong and fast, who inspired his teammates with his incredible work ethic and passion. His personality was always a huge gentlemanly presence accompanied by a big smile. My prayers are that Margo and her boys find strength and comfort going forward.

My heart felt condolances to Rip's family. He was such a positive influence on everyone he touched. I have not seen Rip since I left Chapel Hill but will always remember his intense competitive spirit on the field and love for life off the field. The world needs more people like the Ripper!

The world has lost one of its key players...so very sad.

Warmest Regards,

I am so sadden to hear about Rip. I have known Rip from elementary school and both of us went to school together in N.C. We grew up playing sports with all our friends at Penn Wynne elementary, Taeddys field (sp?),Ardmore, and LM. My every recollection of him is filled with admiration. He was an incredible athlete, a friend you could count on. He had a great sense of humor and was a true gentleman. My thoughts and prayers go out to all his family and friends. We will miss him greatly.

My heart felt condolences go out to the entire Davy Family. I feel blessed to have had an opportunity to meet Rip and Margo on my most recent trip to Wilmington,NC. I believe we all are better people by knowing a human being of Rip's caliber and his example of sincere kindness.

The Knees. That was my introduction to Rip Davy on the football field at Penn Wynne School in third grade. If you were gonna tackle that guy, you were gonna get hurt. His knees would be nearly up to his chin as his legs pumped with one arm cradling the ball, the other stiff arm in front. Oh, and you weren't gonna tackle him. You were just gonna try.

Later in life when I saw Rip, he still had that crooked smile, remembering those early years, when any given day can produce a memory that lasts a lifetime. Those friends from elementary school have earned a place in my heart and are family as much as any cousin in a large extended family, and of everyone I know from those days, each remember Rip as one of the unique characters of our time, a guy who everyone liked, admired and counted on as a forever friend.

To his boys Will and Brooks, his wife Margo, his sister Wendy, and brothers Kirk and Bret, and his mother Nancy, my wife Beth and I extend our condolences. We know that the spirit of Rip Davy, the father, will live on through his sons and in the family, in this generation, and the ones to follow.

May God bless all of you in the difficult moments ahead, and may we rejoice in the privilege of having had Rip Davy in our lives--if only for a day.

With Deepest Sympathy,

It was a great shock and very sad news when I heard about Rip. He and I were friends and varsity wrestlers at the Hill School together. In my mind's eye I still see him tall and strong when we were 18 - as a very tough wrestler on the mats or as a buddy when we hitchhiked down to Ocean City NJ one weekend. He was a great guy with an innate sense of dignity and fairplay and will be sorely missed. Please accept my absolute deepest sympathies

Sincerely,
Norris (Chip) Domangue

Dear Ms. Davy,

I'm so sorry to hear of Rip's death, and also sorry not to have known until now that Rip had moved to Wilmington. We knew each other at Chapel Hill back in the '70s (I dated one of his teammates--Doug Fierro for about a year and a half) and remember a very dynamic guy with a mane of long, yellow hair. I've lived in Wilmington since 1981, although I was from Massachusetts, and I remember fondly the sense of community all of us "yankees" had. He was full of life and energy; my condolences to you and your sons and the rest of Rip's loved ones.

Rip’s family and friends,
You are in my heart, thoughts, and prayers at this time of the lost of this wonderful man. I have known Rip since our days at The Hill School as a kind, loving, and gentle spirit. He was ever-present and a strong and kind friend. Rip was trusted and true. He was a caring, thoughtful, and faithful man in my experience of knowing him. I have so many memories of him and proudly review these thoughts of his walk on this earth. I always admired and appreciated Rip, a man of great dignity and grace. I mourn his lost with you all, and rejoice in the peace that is now his with our Savior. I pray, … Oh! May I be so highly blessed to meet Rip again in that final resting place.

With All My Love,

Dear Margo, Will,Brooks,Mrs. Davy, Wendy, Kirk & Bretr

I can truly say Rip was a great person and true friend. Growing up together, as we did, you get to really know someone. When we were kids playing football it was pretty easy, if Rip was on your team you won, if not you lost. One of my worst fears as a child was being on the losing team and having to try and tackle Rip, it always hurt so much more than tackling anyone else. Despite his extraordinary athletic ability, Rip was always so kind, and caring-- no matter what if you needed help he would be at your side. As we have grown older, despite the distance, the phone calls we would have or the brief visits to philly would always bring back those special memories and I would think about how great a person and friend Rip Davy was.

My deepest sympathy,

Rob Schnall

I was shocked and saddened to learn about Rip's death. Rip and I were childhood friends. My thoughts and memories are full of great times that we shared--on and off the playing fields, where Rip excelled. While playing football, the only person who I wanted on my team was Rip. Shortly after college, I met several professional lacrosse players and when I asked if they had heard of Rip, they repsonded, "He's a legend!!" My deepest sympathies to all of the Davy family. He will be missed.
With Love,

Margo, Kim and I send our deepest sympathies. We are both shocked and saddened by your loss. Ripper was the best. We had some fun competing against each other for business but we were always brothers. I'll always remember the train rides from NYC to Rowayton! May the Lord shine upon you and the boys in the days and weeks to come. And may you take comfort that Rip is in the hands of the Lord.
