RICHARD VOLLERS HANSON Richard Vollers Hanson, age 88, of Wilmington, died Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. He was born at James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington on November 12, 1929, and was the son of the late Louis Andrew de Lolle Hanson and Katherine Vollers Hanson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Ann Lawson Hanson. Mr. Hanson graduated from New Hanover High School and attended UNC-Chapel Hill. He served in the U.S. Army and National Guard, and was the owner of Spirittine Chemical Company. Mr. Hanson was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served in every capacity- from mowing the lawn to church council president. He enjoyed playing golf and attending The 21 Club's weekly gatherings. He never met a stranger, and was quick to offer his famous chocolate chip cookies, which his wife taught him to bake. He is survived by his children: Nancy Hanson Scheunemann of Wilmington, NC, Richard Vollers Hanson, junior and wife, Terri Harris Hanson of Murphy, NC. He was a loving Paw-Paw to his six grandchildren: Leslie Page Scheunemann, Richard Neal Scheunemann, Ann Elizabeth Scheunemann, Emma Hanson Turner and husband Gregory Allan Turner, Katherine Harris Hanson, and Richard Vollers Hanson III. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Louis Andrew Hanson, junior, and sisters, Katherine Hanson Hodder and Elizabeth Hanson Hendrickson and son-in-law, Neal James Scheunemann. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jonathan Conrad and the Rev. Mark Opgrand. Entombment will follow in the Vollers Mausoleum at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Wednesday, prior to the service.
