Richard Weaver Obituary

Richard Weaver

Wilmington - Richard F. "Dick" Weaver, 95, a long-time resident of Wilmington, died on March 4, 2021. He and Ann Logan, the love of his life, served the community in numerous ways. They taught both adults and children to read, cherished many friendships, and loved to play the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. Ann Logan passed away in 2014.

Together, they had four children: Reg, Andy, and George Weaver, and Mary Weaver Briganti (Michael). They also had six grandchildren: Courtney, Ryan, Logan, Hayley, Alexandra, and Madeleine, and three great-grandchildren: Caroline, Grant, and Clark whom they loved dearly. He grew up during the Great Depression in Roanoke, VA with strong family connections and support. His brother, Reg, and sister, Dana Marie, both died early in their lives.

Dick served in the US Navy during World War II as a nose gunner aboard a Martin PBM Mariner patrol bomber seaplane. His brother was a Marine who died in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Although Dick was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal for extraordinary contributions, he never felt like his service was worthy by comparison, and only recently began talking about it. Dick earned a bachelors degree in business under the GI Bill.

He held a number of positions in his career, including a partner in a vending company, and retired from the Hillsborough Community College HR Department in Tampa as Personnel Manager before moving to Wilmington. He had a wonderful sense of humor and wit that he kept his entire life, and that all around him enjoyed. He cherished long-time friends as well as lifelong friendships, and was known by some as the "Mayor of Pine Valley" because he met so many during his neighborhood walks. Dick was gracious, selfless, and generous. He made the world a better place, and would encourage contributions to two organizations he strongly believed in, the Good Shepherd Center, and the Food Bank CENC, both in Wilmington. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare for all their caring and support.

I met Rick Weaver walking REL. From the beginning he was personable, positive, kind and friendly. I’m sad for his passing but know that if there is a heaven, he is there..
