Callie Hamon Obituary

Callie Elizabeth Fly Schaefer Hamon Memorial Service for Mrs. Callie Elizabeth Fly Schaefer Hamon age 101 will be held from the First United Methodist Church in Schulenburg, Tx on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Callie was born on November 9, 1909, in Gonzales, Texas, to Judge Frank Merriman Fly and Stella Miller Fly. She was the oldest of five children and is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry Joseph Schaefer, her brothers: Frank Merriman "Bubba" Fly, Walter Lamar Fly and her sister, Frances "Sister" Fly Otts, and her second husband Knox Hamon. Callie is survived by her brother, William Madden Fly, and his wife, Mary Beth, of Spring, Texas, her children: Callie Frances Schaefer Barnett and her husband Larry of Austin, Henry Philip Schaefer and his wife Jan of Houston. Callie graduated from Gonzales High School in 1926 at the age of sixteen. Shortly thereafter, her parents sent her by train to Martha Washington College for Women in Abingdon, Virginia, for two years, and in 1928 transferred to The University of Texas where she earned her Bachelor's Degree and later, a Master's Degree in English. She began teaching in Schulenburg in 1932 until 1968. In 1935, Callie married Henry Joseph Schaefer, who passed away in 1962. Callie not only taught English, Math, Science, Spanish and History, but also was the first female driving instructor in Texas. For many years she spent late nights directing three-act plays for the school. In 1968, Callie married Knox Hamon and moved to Houston. She retired from teaching after one year at Bellaire High School. Callie was a member of St. Luke's Methodist Church in Houston and sung in the choir for over forty years. Prior to that, she was organist and pianist for First United Methodist Church in Schulenburg for thirty-six years. She kept her home in Schulenburg and visited often. In August of 2010 at the age of 100, Callie was honored to serve as Grand Marshal in the Schulenburg Festival Parade. Family requests donations be made to the Mike Barber Ministries, P.O. Box 1086, DeSoto, TX 75123-1086 or charity of one's choice.

What great memories I have of Callie Schaefer, who taught me all the high school math I ever needed to know (and I still use it competently!). She was one of the team of first-class teachers at Schulenburg High School who made it such a great place.
