Cherrie Carapetyan Obituary

Cherrie Carapetyan Cherrie Turner Carapetyan of Austin died at home Saturday, November 14, with family nearby. She was vivacious, courageous and articulate her entire life until ended by complications from Parkinson's disease. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ara; daughters, Vicki and Martha; sons, Pete, Paul, and David; her twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Born in western Canada, Cherrie devoted her 78 years to the service of others. She taught, led, facilitated, and sang. She organized, fixed, and she cooked. Her accomplishments were many, her friends and admirers legion. A long time friend observed, "When Cherrie was around, something was going to be transformed, it was only a question of what, whom, and how". Though she served several careers, her most constant were her family and friends. Cherrie's view of family could only be described as extended; there was always a place for anyone at her table, and countless friends correctly consider themselves part of her family. Her other principal passions were the love for music she shared with her husband and the community she served with her church congregation. A memorial service for Cherrie will be held at University Presbyterian Church in Austin on Saturday, December 5, at 3:00 p.m. Contributions in her name may be made to University Presbyterian Church's music ministry, or Hospice Austin. My parents lived on the next block for 45 years, and always prized having such wonderful neighbors. May the entire family be consoled in this time of grief, and may her memory continue to be a blessing to all who knew her.

I remember Cherrie, but we called her "Mrs. C." back in her days as PHPC's children's choir director. I learned so much from her, and will always remember the time she paid a special visit to me when my father died.

We know what a wonderful woman Cherrie was through her beautiful daughter Martha. Though we were only in the Carapetyan home once, we have seen the loving power of a great mother in the light that Martha shines wherever she goes. What better legacy could a parent have! Our deepest condolences to all of Cherrie's family.

Cherrie was one of the loveliest, warmest, and most self-reliant,
accomplished, understated people I have ever known. What a
privilege to have known and loved her, and shared such special times through music and sheer friendship....one of God's greatest gifts.

Ara, I saw this familiar face in the paper this morning and wanted to express my condolences. I have just moved to Austin, what a small world. I always remember our musical collaboration with gratitude.
