David Houston Obituary

HOUSTON, David L. David L. Houston passed away May 18, 2018 at the age of 96. A WWII veteran, he was awarded the prestigious Soldier's Medal for valor. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1973, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. David earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and later an M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning from The University of Texas, devoting his career to public service with the City of Austin and the State of Texas. He became involved in international folk dancing in the 1950's, served in leadership capacities for both the Austin and the Texas International Folk Dancers and was a member of the board of the International Folk Culture Center. David is survived by wife Harriet S. Houston, sons Franklin (Dena) and Ronald (Tatiana) Houston, grandchildren Adam (Deborah Bathke) Houston, Rachel (Michael) Bruce, and Tanya Houston, step-children Lisa (Paul) Spencer and David (Shelly) Saunders and grandson Richard (Jessica) Spencer, and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Bruce, Peyton Bruce and Evan Houston. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 2:30 pm at St. Matthews Episcopal Church.
