In Loving Memory of Doris Coy

Doris Elizabeth Jones Coy, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully departed this world on the morning of May 18, 2024, in Austin, Texas. Doris lived a life filled with love and compassion for her family and community.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Major General Edwin A. Coy, USAF (Ret.), her parents, Lucile and William Jones, and her sister, Nina Belle Schwirian. She is survived by her two daughters, Rebecca Coy Henry and her husband Sam of Austin, and Robin Coy Nutter of Corpus Christi, Texas. She is also survived by her three granddaughters, Laura Henry Hotze and her husband Patrick Hotze of Austin, Kristin Nutter of Dallas, and Kathryn Nutter of Houston. Her legacy of love continues through her great-grandchildren, Emma, Harper, and Rebecca Jane Hotze. She was a pillar of support and strength for them throughout their lives. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Warren Coy of Newport Beach, California.

Doris was not only a loving mother but also a cherished grandmother. She was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on April 29, 1930, the eldest daughter of Lucile and William Jones. While training as a nurse in Pennsylvania, Ed asked Doris to marry him. On her wedding day, a severe snowstorm hit McKeesport, PA, and traffic was at a standstill. Doris had to carry her wedding dress to the First Baptist Church for the ceremony.

Ed's distinguished Air Force career took their family all over the United States, with time spent in Florida, California, Alabama, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, and the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Doris excelled in hospitality and made every place they lived feel like home. Always the gracious host, Doris was known among friends and family for her wit and elegance. She was a talented homemaker and wonderful cook, often hosting many Air Force wives' events at the different bases where Ed served. Upon retirement, Ed and Doris spent several years in McLean, Virginia, and later enjoyed life in Wilmington, North Carolina, where they both loved golfing with friends. While living in Wilmington, she took up golf and played until age 84. Traveling was another shared passion they both enjoyed.

Doris and Ed loved the cultural arts and shared this joy with their daughters and granddaughters. The family has fond memories of time together at Morehead City's Atlantic Beach. As a devout Christian Doris found strength and solace in her faith throughout her life. One of her favorite passages was Psalm 23. She was an active member of her church community and found great joy in participating in various church activities. Her faith shaped her character and radiated out to others in her compassionate nature. Doris was active in Wednesday night Bible studies and prayer groups. Apart from her dedication to her family, Doris actively engaged in volunteer and civic work. She was a dedicated member of the Girl Scouts and Air Force Wives clubs, where she built lasting friendships. She showcased her creativity through ceramics and flower arranging.

The Memorial Service will take place at a date yet to be determined. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband at Arlington National Cemetery. With heartfelt gratitude, the family extends their deep appreciation for Doris' community at Brookdale Gaines Ranch.

Her legacy of love, kindness, and grace will continue to inspire and be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her friendship. May she rest in eternal peace. We praise the Lord for her 94 years here on earth. "Surely goodness and mercy will follow her all the days of her life, and she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Psalm 23:6

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in Doris' memory to the American Heart Association.
