Today is September 15, 2009. This week I received a book I purchased on eBay "Julien Sidney Devereaux and His Monte Verdi Plantation". I am a descendent of slaves from that plantation and would always hit a brick wall in my genealogy research; until now. I seareched the Internet in hopes of finding a way to send a thank you note to him.
Thank you to a man I never had the pleaure of meeting for selecting the Devereaux family to invest so much time and effort to establish such detailed records. I saw so many familiar family names in the book. I am truly speechless. Dr. Dorman's life has touched more than he will ever know.

Just recently Jim Faulkner and I were reminiscing about Jim's Uncle Chester (Kielman) and his good friend, Dorman Winfrey. We have happy memories of both men. They may be gone but their work is still with us.

Dear Ruth Carolyn, Laura, and Jennifer,
I am sad to learn that Dorman has gone but will always appreciate the legacy he left us. He always treated me with kindness and as the equal I surely was not. His help in starting Comanche Public Library from scratch was the foundation to a successful endeavor that continues to grow today. His kindness and grace will always be remembered.

Clifton and I shall never forget Dorman and have recalled him many times over the years when our paths no longer crossed. We just found out about his passing today. The history world was never the same after he retired.

To the family my condolances.
In 1963 Dorman gave me a part time job packing books without which I could not have stayed at UT. It turned out to be a life's milestone year from which an entire career and a better life grew. Thank you Dorman.

Laura, Jennifer and Ruth Carolyn, I was saddened by your loss and am disappointed that I was out of town this week. Please know that my thoughts are with you in this time of reflection. I have fond thoughts of your dad and husband, remembering him as I grew up in the church. He was always a supportive and caring person.

Dr. Winfrey was a very creative and thoughtful person and always very kind whenever he was either calling or visiting our division. It is with great pride that I can say he was our agency director during my first two years with the Texas State Library. We have all lost a great historian for our state. My sincere sympathy and condolences to Mrs. Winfrey and the family.

Dear Jennifer, Laura and Ruth Carolyn,
We just heard about your loss and we share in your grief. Dorman will always be remembered as a gentle, kind and caring man. He was a great father and a wonderful friend to me and my family. I will always remember the trips to Johnson City and sipping hot tea (that we hand picked the mint from the garden round the back porch) while watching an orchestra on KLRU in your living room.
Denver will miss his calls to Dorman - whom he called his best friend.
Our Love,
Wendy Yates Owens and family

Dr. Dorman Winfrey was a special friend and mentor, a thoughtful, Renaisance Man. He was greatly respected in Liberty, Texas, especially by Jean and Judge Price Daniel and Family. Dr. Winfrey always supported the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center and continued his interest after leaving the agency. He will be missed.

Dear Ruth Carolyn, I only found out about Dorman's passing at the very time of the fureral; otherwise I certainly would have been there. Dorman made so many substantial contributions to the University, the State Library and Archives, and the preservation of Texas History. He richly deserves to be remembered with great appreciation and respect.

Dorman was truly a man of culture who cherished art, music, literature, history, philosopy. But what made him so special was his enthusiasm and joy for the simple things, for the work and lives of common people. He encouraged others, kept up with them, relished in their accomplishments. He had such a zest for life and a loving heart. Texas lost a great man. We'll miss him!

Dear Ruth Carolyn, Laura and Jennifer,
Thoughts of your family bring warmth and a smile. I will never forget being at the Tech Library, hearing that our fathers were in high school together. Your dad always seemed so very youthful...bright, cheerful, interesting and interested. I remember his love for Big Bend inspired a big trip for Laura, much to Ruth Carolyn's dismay!
Please know that I am holding you close in my heart, and sending a hug.

He touched many lives, mine for example, in ways that inspired us. These many years later I can still remember him at U.T. when I was very young! My condolences. Frances Slaughter
