Duane MILLER Obituary

MILLER, Duane Melvon
July 23, 1912 - November 27, 2013

At the age of 101, Duane Miller passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love and admiration of family and many friends. Born in Los Angeles, CA to Harry and Grace Miller he was the first born of 4 boys. After graduation he worked for the CA. Dept. of Water and Power before moving to Sacramento where he worked for the CA. Dept. of Employment. When WW II broke out he joined the Marines after gaining credentials as an an expert rifleman in the National Guard. He served as a rifle instructor and was sent to the South Pacific until the end of the war in 1946. He then returned to the Dept. of Employment, became a manager of Data Processing until his retirement in 1973. Tickets to his retirement party were sold out to a standing crowd. He married Blanche (Draper) Terry in 1950; they lived in the Fair Oaks & Citrus Heights areas. They enjoyed bowling & golfing; Duane especially loved their cabin on the American River. He was an avid deer hunter and a lifelong member of the Folsom Shooting Club where he donated his enviable collection of guns. Blanche preceded him in death in 1993. He is survived by daughters, Donna Huffor (Palm Desert), and Patricia Odell (Newport, OR); grandchildren, Terri Odell and Michael Odell (Oregon) plus 'greats' and 'great-greats.' Duane served his country and lived his life with honor. Having a great sense of humor, Duane often quipped that he was 'just a kid trying to get along.' Duane has been interred at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Dixon, CA. A military service is set for 1 P.M., March 12, 2014. For more information, contact Patricia Odell: (541) 265-3050.

Semper Fi, Mr. Miller. I'm glad I had the honor of meeting you and talking about your experiences on the range at FSC. Your guns have been put to good use, you should know that one of them is still used to teach youth to shoot. Your legacy lives on sir.

Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever. Duane was my boss at DOE years ago and we also bowled on the same league after work. Of course he was always MR MILLER at work and Duane at bowling. He was a wonderful person as a boss and a nice guy/friend after work. He will be missed. He and Blanch were nice people whom I had the pleasure of knowing. God Bless
