Felix Leal Obituary

Felix V. Leal Felix Leal peacefully passed away on May 31, 2013 at home surrounded by his wife and family. Felix was born to Antonio and Elvira Leal on November 20, 1927. He attended The Presbyterian Pan American School and at the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Marines. During his service, Felix was stationed in Peiping, China where he met Theresa J. Stone who was in the Women's Army Corp. They were married in Augusta, Ga. on June 5, 1947. Felix was honorably discharged in 1949 and moved his family to Corpus Christi, Tx. and in 1953 they settled in Austin, Texas. Felix's career in the optical business began at T.S.O. in Corpus Christi and continued in Austin at Dallas Holford Opticians. In 1967 he began his own business, Felix Leal Opticians and became a respected Optician and Contact Lens Technician. He later became interested in ocular prosthetics which required further study and training in the fabrication and fitting of ocular prosthetics. His friend, Vernon Lamb of San Angelo, an established Ocularist, shared his time and knowledge for which Felix was forever grateful. Felix had a love and dedication to ocular prosthetics which became another phase of his optical career. He became and remained the only Ocularist in the Austin area until his reluctant retirement in March 2008. Felix was President of the Contact Lens Society of Texas, a board member of the American Society of Ocularists, Prevent Blindness of Texas and many other optical organizations. He was president of the West Austin Lions Club, Rotary Club, Mexican American Chamber of Commerce and many other civic organizations in Austin. Felix also served as bailiff for the Travis County Court at Law #5 in Austin. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends in Benavides, Tx. He was also famous for his barbecues and loved to entertain his family and friends in his backyard. Felix is preceded in death by his father and mother, his sister Lucia Reyes and brother Ernesto Leal. He is survived by his brother Enrique Leal and his sister Magdelena Denham. Felix is also survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 66 years, Theresa Leal and his six children, Felix Leal Jr., Donna D'Abadie, Robert Leal, David Leal, Kathy Menges, Judi Caiati and granddaughter Jessica Sertuche. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Healthsense Home Care and the nurses and aides at Odyssey Hospice of Austin for the excellent care given to Felix and his family. A very special thank you to Linda Lowenthal for her constant love and support over the years and especially during Felix's last days. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Shoreline Church, 15201 Burnet Rd, Austin, Tx 78728

I am a friend of Judi's and was impressed by her father's life and occupation. I know he was loved and respected by her, as well as others. The loss is great because his life was great.

I've never been more proud to be a daughter of Felix and Terry Leal. Today was so much more than I had imagined. The love that we witnessed today for daddy and our family was overwhelming yet graciously received. Dad you were the perfect husband and father who loved us unconditionally, and as evidenced by your memorial today, a loyal friend who was loved and respected by many. You are a phenomenal, God fearing man and I miss you with every breath I take. I love you daddy.

As a patient of Felix Leal, I remember the warmth of a family owned business every time I walked through the door.
Once I saw him perfecting the veining on a new artificial eye for a young boy needing a new one. It was a donation of his time, materials and artistic expertise to help someone in need.

I was amazed at his talent and asked many questions about the process before he fitted my new contact lenses.

I was a patient for about twenty years.

My heart goes out to his entire family!

I suppose if all were written down what this man meant to all of us the world could not contain the books. My "Po Po" I'm so proud of you. Having fought the good fight and never quitting always flying straight and right. I can hear the Lord even saying to you, "well done my good and faithful servant. come now and receive your reward!!!!!" Also Elvis Presley whom you shared dinner with in Houston, Tex. will be glad to see you as well as those friends and family who have gone before you into glory. If I know my Po Po I can tell you he is lay at the feet of our Lord giving him honor and worship. Because Christ who knew no sin became sin and dying on the cross took our place and saved us all. To live is Christ to die is gain for those who believe. Do not fear the first death for that is only temporary, but fear the second death being eternally separated from God. The meaning of life is to prepare to meet God. I pray if you have not asked the Lord into your heart that you repent, humble yourself and turn from your wicked ways. God has forgiven you. Po Po, your legacy will live forever. I am deeply saddened and tragically heartbroken to my very core but I'm reminded that because He lives we shall also live. I will see you soon Po Po !!!! I would also like to thank my Po Po for marrying my beautiful grandmother. My grandmother is the cornerstone of this family. She is the greatest woman on the planet. She is so strong and classy and respectful and smart and beautiful. She is the best of all of us and I love you so much gran ma!!! Also thank you for having my beautiful mother and uncles and aunts. Rejoice and be glad for your reward is truly now in heaven!!! May the spirit of peace flow through you for you are not alone.- LOVE ALWAYS- little Felix-

ALL GLORY AND HONOR AND PRAISE TO MY PERSONAL SAVIOR WHO SITS AT THE VERY RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER. I PRAY IN ALL HUMILITY YET BOLDLY COME TO THE THRONE OF MY FATHER IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH. FATHER THANK YOU FOR SENDING YOUR SON WHO KNEW NO SIN TO BECOME SIN AND BEING CRUCIFIED AND BY THE BRUTAL SHEDDING OF HIS HOLY BLOOD PAID THE RANSOM FOR EVERY SOUL. NOW IS THE TIME FOR SALVATION. FOR CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS ALIVE! BECAUSE HE LIVES WE LIVE! TO LIVE IS CHRIST AND TO DIE IS GAIN FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN HIM. YES MY BROTHER BRIAN IS VERY RIGHT IN SAYING MY GRANDFATHER IS ALIVE! HE IS MORE ALIVE THAN ANYONE OF US! FOR WE LIVE ON EARTH. A TEMPORARY PLACE WITH TEMPORARY RELATIONSHIPS. MY GRANDFATHER IS NOT HERE AND I AM DEEPLY SADDENED AND TRAGICALLY DEVASTATED TO THE VERY CORE OF MY HEART. YET AS DEEP AS THE DEEPEST VALLEY IS; NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF THE LAMB. JESUS SAID TO HIS DISCIPLES, "IN MY FATHERS HOUSE THERE ARE MANY MANSIONS IF IT WERE NOT SO I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU. I GO THERE TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU AND THERE YOU SHALL BE WITH ME FOREVER! AND I WILL SEND THE COMFORTER IN MY PLACE. THANK YOU FATHER FOR YOUR HOLY WORD AND THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE RAISED IN THIS FAMILY. THE CORNERSTONE OF THIS FAMILY WAS NOT MY GRANDFATHER BUT IS AND ALWAYS WAS MY GRANDMOTHER OR " ME MA". SHE WAS AND IS THE LIGHT OF MY GRANDFATHERS EYE. GRAND MA YOU ARE THE MOST AMAZING WOMAN ON THE ENTIRE PLANET EARTH. YOUR GRACE,CLASS, AND PERSONALITY SHIMMER LIKE THE STARS AS THEY TESTIFY OF YOUR BEST AND GREATEST GIFT THAT YOU NOT ONLY POSSES BUT ACTUALLY EXUDE AND THAT IS LOVE. THE LOVE THAT YOU HAVE DEVOTED TO YOUR HUSBAND GAVE BIRTH TO A FAMILY. A FAMILY BUILT ON YOUR LOVE AND THE LOVE GRAND PA HAD FOR YOU AND US WILL FOREVER SOUND OFF AND EVEN SHALL THE THRONE ROOM OF HEAVEN HERE OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE WITH THIS GIFT OF LOVE HE GAVE TO YOU. MY GRAND MA I CHERISH YOU AND I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS. TO ALL MY AUNTS AND UNCLES AND MY BEAUTIFUL MOMMY THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US ALL HOW TO LOVE OUR PARENTS. GROWING UP I HAD A FRONT ROW SEAT TO WHAT A REAL FAMILY LOOKS LIKE. THE LOVE AND RESPECT YOU SHOWED MY GRANDPARENTS WILL FOREVER BE A TESTAMENT TO THE LOVE THEY GAVE YOU.TO MY COUSINS I SAY WOW!! WE WERE SO BLESSED TO HAVE THE GREATEST GP EVER!! HOW COOL WAS GP!!! THE COOLEST FOR ANY GENERATION!! I LOOK FORWARD TO REUNITING WITH HIM IN MY FATHERS HOUSE! TO EVERYONE IN OUR FAMILY I SEND MY LOVE. AND TO MY DEAR GRAN PA OR "PO PO" AS ONLY I CALLED HIM I SAY THANK YOU FOR BEING THE BEST AND I WILL FOREVER BE PROUD TO BE NAMED AFTER YOU. YOUR LEGACY WILL LIVE ON THROUGH ALL OF US. I JOINED THE MARINES BECAUSE I WANTED TO MAKE YOU PROUD OF ME. I WANTED TO HONOR NOT JUST YOU BUT YOUR VERY NAME. I WEAR MY NAME AS A CLOAK OF HONOR. I WANTED TO BE YOUR BROTHER AND WHEN I WALKED ACROSS THAT PARADE DECK I KNEW I HAD EARNED THE TITLE OF UNITED STATES MARINE AND AT THAT MOMENT I WAS FOREVER YOUR BROTHER. I WANTED TO BE NEAR YOU ALWAYS I STUDIED YOUR EVERY MOVE AND TO THIS DAY I SAY AND ACT JUST LIKE YOU GRAN PA. IF ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU DID WERE WRITTEN I SUPPOSE NOT ALL THE BOOKS IN THE WORLD COULD CONTAIN WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU MEAN TO ALL OF US. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME ROOF THE HOUSE WITH YOU AND UNCLE JIMMY WHEN I WAS 10 YEARS OLD I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU TREATED ME LIKE I WAS ONE OF THE GUYS. SEMPER FI PO PO ... To my grandfather, Allthogh its been a few weeks scince your passing, I find myself still saddend by your absence. Then i remember where you are, walking with Jesus talking with him and being in the presence of our glorious lord. Then i smile because i know your in a much better place. A place of happiness, joy, and laughter. A place with no pain, sorrow, tears or sadness; who cuoldn't smile about that? I also remember that you are still with us not in body but in spirit. You are apart of all of us and when you died a little piece of us died too. You left behind memories that our family will share for years to come. You were more than a great man,you were a great husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and son. It is because of you that our family is as strong as it is today and will remain strong for years to come. We love you and miss you so much. It,s goodbye for now until you welcome us at the gates of eternal heven, then we too will walk and talk with you along side Jesus together. Love Your grandson,
