Gary Mackey Obituary

Gary "John" Mackey Gary "John" Mackey was born on November 14th, 1958 in Mt. Holly, New Jersey to John R. Mackey and Ockhee Mackey. He graduated from Copperas Cove High School in 1975. He attended Southwest Texas with a major in commercial art, but did not see eye to eye with his instructors. Thus began the rebellious artistic journey of our friend John Mackey. While he took jobs painting signs, houses, and mixing paint at Breed and Co. for over twenty years, he always maintained an unwavering commitment to his own artistic ideal, one that was singular and often perplexing. He could draw, cartoon, paint, sculpt, rhyme, act, and play guitar, trumpet, piano, and harmonica all with a wry intelligence that often went overlooked due to his laid back style. Sometimes, unsatisfied with a piece of work, he would destroy it, usually making a copy first on the Xerox machine he kept in his apartment amongst his classic guitars, antique guns, hot wheels, pop art, skateboard decks, and a music collection ranging from Glenn Gould to Sonny Boy Williamson, from Miles Davis to Radiohead. He jammed skillfully with many musicians over the years moving easily from bluegrass to Chicago blues. John Mackey leaves behind a strong legion of friends and fans. Most of all we will remember his humor, his generosity, and his searing intelligence. We've lost not only a great friend, but a great mind.

John was an incredible friend! We shared guitars, drink, and our incessant humor. I only recently found out about his passing, but it hurts all the same to know he's gone. I will ALWAYS remember his humor and personality while we were at SWTSU together. Rest easy my friend...I will always miss you!

Mackey,
I am shocked and deeply saddened by your untimely departure. At the same, I feel bittersweetly peaceful in knowing that you live on among all of us through your art and the memories we've made. Thanks for everything, John - you will be sorely missed.

John, I also keep finding myself at a loss for words, partly because my eloquence never matched yours. But from the heart, I miss you, bodhisattva.

p.s. to Brigette, Gary(John to us) spoke often about his days at Copperas Cove, he'd be tickled to know you were thinking of him.

I keep finding it hard to write anything about John. There are so many times that he was the only one who understood me and I find it impossible that he is gone. He helped me through many hard times but he also ushered in many many good times a well. I miss you buddy!

I would like to speak for all of us here at Texas State University and say that first of all we share with you in your time of grief and will truly miss Gary as one of our Bobcat family members here in San Marcos. As another chance for family, friends, loved ones, and fellow students to honor the life of Gary John Mackey, the family and friends are invited to the annual Student Foundation Bobcat Pause memorial service for all Bobcats, past and present, who have passed away throughout the year. Dear family and friends of Gary,
I attended High School with Gary and we corresponded for many years after, but lost touch. I have been trying to find him for the past few months and was very sad to see his name in today's obituary. Please accept my sincerest condolences.
Sincerely,
Brigitte
