George ATKINS Obituary

ATKINS, George Pope
George Pope Atkins of Annapolis, MD died on December 3, 2016 at Hospice of the Chesapeake due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease. He was born to George Taylor and Louise Long Atkins on March 4, 1934 in Austin, Tx. Pope, as he was know to all, was 82 years old.

Pope grew up in Austin and graduated from the University of Texas, where he was enrolled in the Navy ROTC program. After earning a BA in English he was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy as a Naval Aviator. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and flew S2Fs--aircraft carrier-based anti-submarine aircrafts--in the Pacific for 4 years. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserves for 8 more years.

In August 1960, he married Joan Jorns. They lived in Washington, D.C. where Pope received his PhD in International Relations from American University (from which he later received a special award for Academic Leadership). They then moved to New York City and from there, they spent three years in Argentina and Ecuador while Pope worked for Citibank in its international banking division.

In 1966 Pope joined the civilian faculty at the U.S. Naval Academy where he taught International Relations and Latin American Politics for 28 years. He authored 12 academic books, numerous journal articles, and served as department chair for four years. During his tenure at USNA, he spent sabbaticals and summer terms researching and writing at the Institute of Latin American Studies on Tavistock Square in London, the London School of Economics, the University of Texas, American University and in the Dominican Republic. He held the Tom Slick Chair of World Peace at the LBJ School in 1991-92.

After retiring from the Naval Academy in 1994 as Professor Emeritus, he spent 8 years as a Research Fellow at the University of Texas Institute of Latin American Studies. The couple eventually moved to a cottage in the woods on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Pope is survived by his beloved wife Joan, his sister Louann(Larry) Temple of Austin, TX, children Taylor (Maggie) Atkins of Chatham, NJ, Virginia (Jeffrey) Wilson of Annapolis, MD, Kristen (Jason Lyman) Atkins of Charlottesville, VA, and grandchildren Carly and Tyler Wilson, Zachary and Ethan Atkins, and Cole and Renee Lyman.

Pope and Joan are friends for life. Pope and I were at UT at the same time, served our country as Navy pilots after UT. He got his PhD and I got a law degree from UT. We were recruited by Citibank NY in the same year. Pope left the bank to teach at Annapolis and LBJ and I left to come back to Texas to practice international law. He beat me to heaven!! Great human being. It would be a better world if there were more people like Pope and Joan.

Only knowing Mr. Atkins for a short time. It was easy to see that he was quite an accomplished and loving Husband to his wife who was always so adoring and supportive of him. May the Lord of the heavens comfort you and your family at this time. Allowing you to cherish the many wonderful memories that you made together. Sending you peace and comfort.

I first met Pope and Joan 50 years ago, and we remained the best of friends throughout. They often came to London, and it was a joy to spend time together both in town and on our holidays abroad. And what marvellous children they raised too. The Atkinses added immeasurably to our lives, and Helen and I will miss Pope greatly. We send all our love to Joan and family, especially during this sad, sad time.

How sad. Pope and I had a lot of things in common. We both loved Texas, The University of Texas, the Navy, Flying, Citibank New York, and Latin America. Pope and I graduated from UT in the same year. We joined the Navy and became pilots the same year, We joined Citibank New York the same year. He was sent to Argentina and I to Mexico. Later he went to Ecuador and I to Argentina. After Citibank while he was teaching at the LBJ School we both served on the Board of Governors of the UT Arts & Science College. The only thing Pope and I did not share was our politics, but we were smart enough never to talk about it. Pope was a most gracious and sensitive person. I have never had a better friend.

Joan, I know how much Pope loved you, your children, grandchildren and his sister. All of you, please accept my most heartfelt condolences. It's hard to write these things with tears running down my face.

It's hard for me to express the sadness I feel. Pope and I were very close friends. We had a lot of things in common. We graduated from the University of Texas in the same year. We went into the Navy and became Navy Pilots at the same time. We joined Citibank in the same year. He was sent to Argentina and I was sent to Mexico. Later I was sent to Argentina and he went to Ecuador. We were both on the Board of Governors of the College of Arts & Sciences. I have never had a better friend,or known a more gracious and sensitive person. The only thing we did not share was politics, but we loved each other enough never to talk about it.

Joan, you know how we felt about each other and how much I love you both. I know how much Pope loved you, your children and grandchildren. My most heartfelt condolences to you and all of the Atkins. Its hard to write these things with tears running down my face.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Pope Atkins. Dr. Atkins was a wonderful man, friend, and neighbor. He helped to shape my adolescent years, and provided guidance in pursuing my dream of attending the Academy. I was fortunate to have taken his class while a Midshipman. He was a brilliant professor as well as an incredibly dedicated family man. As a friend of Kristen, I was always invited into his home in Bay Ridge, and his home was always filled with love, laughter, and support. My thoughts and prayers are with the Atkins Family during this very difficult time. Rest in Peace Pope.
