Glenn Dunn Obituary
Glenn Eric Dunn, 77, passed away on February 10, 2023, after battling dementia. Born in Dallas on March 4, 1945, he was the son of Eric Vester (E.V.) Dunn, Jr. and Bobbie Reynolds. Though E.V. knew that Glenn was coming, he was killed in action over Germany before meeting him. Glenn gained a Daddy when Bobbie remarried Archie McCurry.
Glenn moved frequently due to Archie's naval career. He often travelled back to Texas where his family and his heart lived. After graduating from Chula Vista High School in 1963, he enrolled at UT Austin, graduating in 1969 with a BFA in Technical Theater.
After graduation, Glenn enlisted in the Army. Stationed in Germany, he served as a parachutist and earned the rank of Second Lieutenant. Discharged in 1972, Glenn stayed to travel Europe landing in Sitges, Spain. Glenn made his money playing guitar and singing Irish songs in bars. One evening, the lady asked to pass the hat was a lovely Dutchie on holiday, Hendrina (Ineke) Vercouteren. He later landed on her doorstep, and on December 29, 1972, they married. The American man met his Dutch lady at an Irish bar in Spain.
In 1973 they moved to Austin. Glenn built his career joining IATSE Locals 205 and 484 working behind the scenes in performing arts. His talents touched thousands of concerts, ballets, operas, and plays. He toured with a Broadway musical. He built TV sets. He worked on films, including Red Headed Stranger, Raggedy Man, Tender Mercies, Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part II, and Year of the Dragon. He retired in 2017. When he went to movies he sat through the credits to look for friends and to pay tribute to those who work so hard behind the scenes.
Glenn loved beer, unfiltered cigarettes, bacon, and his family. He loved singing, storytelling, and debating politics. He was a proud union man and mentor. He was the king of Trivial Pursuit beating us EVERY SINGLE TIME. He loved woodworking, all things Irish, and movies. Dementia robbed him of his ferocity and quick wit. COVID created a forced loneliness. Ineke cared for him tirelessly until the end. He celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by family. We will miss him so much. Please raise a glass for him.
Glenn was preceded in death by his father E.V. Dunn, Jr., Mother Bobbie McCurry, Daddy Archie McCurry, and brother Gary McCurry. He is survived by his wife Ineke Dunn; daughters Marita Stollenwerk and Elke Ursin; sons-in-law Chuck Stollenwerk and August Ursin; grandchildren Vonne, Jasper, and Ellen Stollenwerk and Ady Ursin; and lots of other family and friends.
Visitation will be held on February 16, 11am to 2pm at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks, Austin. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Austin Humane Society or to Alzheimer's Disease Research. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. It will be a party not to be missed.
